This is grim reading the police have been found to be systematically abusing their power and that they have endemic problem when it comes to a "readiness of police to criminalise women who have been the victim of male violence"

Greater Manchester Police report reveals officers' demeaning strip searches, unlawful arrests and retraumatising of victims

The Baird Inquiry was launched in response to a Sky News investigation into GMP's treatment of three women in custody in one police station.

that was a tough read. For fucks sake these police forces.

A damning report has found officers at Greater Manchester Police are abusing their power - making unlawful arrests, unlawful and demeaning strip searches, sometimes treating victims as perpetrators, and traumatising those who have suffered sexual abuse or domestic violence.

ILLEGAL.

But the response is oh, we're not civil enough we're not sensitive enough.

Chief Constable Stephen Watson has promised immediate action and apologised for what he describes as "incivility, insensitivity, compounded by a lack of routine leadership, scrutiny, and individual examples of low standards, poor behaviour, insensitivity, and a lack of care in the face of vulnerability".

If they've broken the law they should be in prison. Not apologising for not being fucking sensitive enough.

Hoardasurass · 18/07/2024 12:36

Agreed @Datun he's on sky news now waffling on about how much of it happened during the time they were in special measure and needs to be taken in context ffs

OP posts:
TheABC · 18/07/2024 12:38

Special measures, my arse! Those policemen were abusing their powers! What happened in those cells was assault. Why is it being handwaved away?

GailBlancheViola · 18/07/2024 12:43

And what charges are going to be brought against the Police Officers in the cases detailed in the report? They should be facing criminal AND disciplinary charges so are they?

Dumbo12 · 18/07/2024 12:43

So the take away message from this, as always, is, if you want to get away with criminal acts, especially against women, is join the constabulary.
Is there a police "service" in the country that isn't riddled with misogyny.?

TheABC · 18/07/2024 13:41

How do we push on this? I can't see the force being willing to prosecute its own officers. Who watches the watchmen?

Chersfrozenface · 18/07/2024 13:42

This is the force that called Nathan AKA Naomi O'Brien a woman in all its communication about O'Brien's crime of inciting a man to sexually abuse a toddler.

dick27 · 18/07/2024 13:43

And they need to stop marking their own fucking homework - the complaints system is a joke

LizzieSiddal · 18/07/2024 14:13

It’s all so depressing isn’t it. Those poor women. I’m so glad they’ve had some vindication but they also deserve the officers who abused them to be bright to justice.

Blackcats7 · 18/07/2024 14:57

I honestly don’t think women can trust the police at all knowing what we do about the behaviour and attitudes prevalent throughout the whole organisation.
I used to be very pro police but not anymore.
Have a look at To Catch a Copper on channel 4. It was jaw dropping. And there seem to be no consequences for the officers involved in abuse in the vast majority of cases. It is disgusting.

lcakethereforeIam · 18/07/2024 15:11

It's been reported in the Telegraph

On ITV News now.

Rightsraptor · 18/07/2024 19:45

I used to read about other countries where people were too fearful to ever voluntarily enter a police station or even initiate contact with the police. I used to think how glad I was that it wasn't like that in the UK.

I know this is the feminist board and all, and totally agree with you all about the women in this, but I just want to acknowledge that poor man Mark aka Matthew who was forced to walk stark naked through the police station.

Unfuckingbelieveable.

Datun · 18/07/2024 19:48

Illegal strip searches.

The police are sexually assaulting women. for what? Kicks? Punishment?

DrBlackbird · 18/07/2024 19:49

Both. And because they can.

Omlettes · 18/07/2024 19:50

They have gone after many GC women,
reinforcing that this whole ideology is based and soaked in misogyny.

Datun · 18/07/2024 19:50

And men too it would appear.

Those responsible need to be fucking arrested.

Feminists are as concerned for the abuse of males as anyone else, its outrageous what they did to him.
Sociopaths in the police, nursing etc all must be rooted out and never employed again.

Rightsraptor · 18/07/2024 20:00

Quite, @Omlettes, but how can they be identified? I'm no psychologist so I have no idea if there are tests to weed these people out before they're employed. Unfortunately, jobs where you have authority over others tend to attract these people.

duc748 · 18/07/2024 20:04

There was also the awful case of that guy who spent 17 years in prison for a rape (rare conviction 🙄) he didn't commit, and the bastards knew about it, and let him moulder in prison. Seems like Shabana Mahmood is on the case.

There is only one reason any of the strip searches and leaving people naked was done and this is for the purposes of humiliation and degradation. It is well known that people feel extremely vulnerable when naked it is done as a form of torture ffs. Every single police officer involved in any of these cases has to face criminal penalties.

SinnerBoy · 18/07/2024 20:26

I'd like to say I'm surprised, I'd like to say I'm shocked by these revelations, but given the events which have come to light over the last few years, I'm not. I'm not unfeeling for the victims, it's just that it is so widespread and commonplace across so many forces.

I am outraged, not least because the perpetrators seem to face little or no sanction. I can only hope that, because of the high esteem in which Vera Baird is held and her position to influence, that the victims are able to obtain some redress.

It will, depressingly, probably be the usual payout for silence, no admission of culpability and 'Blah, blah, lessons learned, meaningless waffle."

GailBlancheViola · 18/07/2024 21:14

I can't remember the exact wording off the top of my head and too lazy to look for it at the minute but what GMP have done must meet the criteria of degrading and inhumane treatment part of Human Rights Legislation which is NOT allowed.

It is abundantly clear that these police officers were on one hell of a power trip, they need to be sacked, criminally charged and publicly named.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/07/2024 21:30

Yes, agree. They aren't safe to work with the public.
