I'm currently reading The Women who Wouldn't Wheesht and would love to have some other recommendations of books on the topic of protecting women's rights and safe spaces, gender critical voices, feminist authors in general that are GC, etc.

I'm just getting back into enjoying reading after a period of burnout where I couldn't take books in, and now my love of reading has returned I'd like to expand my book wish list.

The Helen Joyce and Kathleen Stock books are the best, I think, if you're looking for specifically gender-critical authors. I'd also recommend the books by Abigail Shrier, Holly Lawford-Smith and Karen Ingala Smith.

If you want to read something that's entertaining and fun, though, try Gareth Roberts's book Gay Shame. A really enjoyable read.

Well...

You could always read two books written by some of the women on this board. And look volume one also comes up in the 'customers also bought' on The Women Who Wouldn't WHEESHT page!

Not that I'm biased about the brilliance of the two volumes or anything!

Volume 2 https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CMJZ43VZ

Invisible Women by Caroline Criado-Perez

Not specifically GC but a great book explaining how the world is designed around men and how the failure to capture sex disaggregated data does women a great disservice in so many areas of life. It's very readable but I warn you in advance, it will make you very angry. 😡

It's definitely a read a bit put it down whilst you wait for the anger to dissipate type of book. But then once you've calmed down you read the next chapter and get angry all over again! At least I'm assuming that wasn't just me!

Not really on this topic but I have to recommend Hags by Victoria Smith.

Redshoeblueshoe · 10/07/2024 16:44

I think Hannah Barnes Time to think is essential reading, especially for politicians.

Iamawomenphenominally · 10/07/2024 18:34

Thanks for everyone's recommendations so far!

I do have Invisible Women and would also recommend it. I agree about reading it, needing to calm my anger and then reading a bit more!

I also recommend Trans by Helen Joyce and Gay Shame by Gareth Roberts.

lochmaree · 10/07/2024 20:57

Trans: When Ideology meets Reality (it has a new title now I think?)
Material Girls
Cynical Theories
The New Puritans
The Coddling of the American Mind
Bad Therapy
You're Teaching my Child What?
Unfair Play
The Case Against the Sexual Revolution
Lost in Trans Nation
Time to Think

Bunty2727 · 11/07/2024 10:15

Wow what a great list! Ihave to catch up with you, thanks for the reccs

PepeParapluie · 11/07/2024 10:44

Another vote for Material Girls by Kathleen Stock. Really easy to read, clear and very level headed.

Pratincole · 11/07/2024 11:43

And if you fancy something a little lighter and fun try The End of the World is Flat by Simon Edge

MassiveWordSalad · 11/07/2024 13:36

'Sexed' by Susanna Rustin

I haven't read this yet, but it has been discussed on this board and looks interesting. A history of British feminism by a woman who understands basic biology and isn't afraid to say so.

On a tangent, you might like Graham Linehan's memoir 'Tough Crowd' documenting what happened to him when he tried to stick up for women.

IdgieThreadgoodeIsMyHeroine · 12/07/2024 17:02

I second 'Sexed' by Susannah Rustin. I have just started it and, so far, it's excellent.

Julie Bindel, Feminism for Women

Kajsa Ekis Ekman, On the Meaning of Sex: Thoughts about the New Definition of Woman

Jane Clare Jones, Annals of the TERF Wars

If you're interested in the situation in the USA, Kara Dansky's The Abolition of Sex is a good relatively short primer from a leftist (Democrat) perspective.

I'm really looking forward to Hounded: Women, Harms and the Gender Wars by Scottish poet Jenny Lindsay (one of the contributors to The Women Who Wouldn't Wheesht), due in January 2025.

As you brought up the wonderful Jenny Lindsay may I recommend a book she appears in "Unbridled"

"A powerful and defiant anthology of poems by women who refuse to be censored or silenced.
Edited by award-wining Scottish poet, Magi Gibson, Unbridled brings together women's voices from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England, Spain, USA and Australia.
Published 2023 by WomanWord Books. 164 pages
Read it and rage. Read it and be cheered by the power of women speaking out collectively and defiantly"

(I highly recommend the poem on pages 75 and 76. Now that poet is amazing! 😏)
