POW candidate mocked by Northumbria police for reporting threat.

1/2 Breaking!!!! A #PartyofWomen candidate reported a threat to @ northumbriapol @ POWLizPanton

They did not take the threat seriously and put the phone down on her… or so they thought. In fact, the line stayed open and we have the recording of what was said:

PC 1: What does she think happens? You have put yourself out there, as the voice of the people, and people out there don't like what you have to say.

PC2: She accepted that in all fairness. I don't think there's any real credible threat.

PC1: Ah she won't accept that. She's made reference to getting punched and tagging her leaflet. But you were giving them out! You cannot take back the fact that you are handing the fucking things out! I don't get it!

Male voice: "If anyone's going to come and punch her it's going to be . . .”

PC1: “ME!”

PC2: (Laughing) Punch a Nazi!

Two of the officers were female. They work for @ sCCJardineNP

"A woman worried for her safety"

But this specific woman we're referring to is a candidate for a party whose main focus is anti-trans, and the "worried for safety" party is directly related to how people are going to react when she chooses to go onto their property to dish out her anti-trans material to them? As I said in another thread (about the other POW candidate in trouble with police) how are actual trans people going to feel when they enter their property to hand them that??

Did I get it right? We're not talking about a random woman just walking down a street minding her own business?

And yes, obviously threats/causing fear is unacceptable and illegal, but people have a right to use their voice and express their opinions and I do hope people are telling these POW candidates (and other extreme-right hate parties) what they think of them when they have chosen to enter their property to give out hate.

'She's asking for it'

Thanks for a perfect illustration of the problem.

That reads very badly, but it's clearly a joke.

That's why I find it far more worrying that in all seriousness they are suggesting women should stay silent and out of politics, or stay in and expect to be threatened. That part was entirely serious, and shows a horrifying grasp of what the police's duty is.

Yeah they were joking, they thought it was all hilarious.

But its the police joking about punching women. It is unacceptable.
As was the don't leave the house if you feel threatened comment, which they appear to think is an entirely sensible solution

It's all such a depressing insight into the police, how they think, act, and who they think is deserving of protection

Yes - I hope that she gets some financial backing.

If she wants to crowdfund I’d throw some dosh in the collection hat - such disgraceful behaviour from the police needs to be made an example of.

PepeParapluie · 04/07/2024 21:42

@ChristinappleAnd yes, obviously threats/causing fear is unacceptable and illegal’

yeah, that’s the point. That’s what she was reporting. And this is how the police responded.

PurpleSparkledPixie · 04/07/2024 21:45

Thanks for the clarification above. It does sound more about politicians in general when written down (which was why I wanted to hear it again).

A woman worried for her safety asks the police for help and their attitude is ‘don’t go out’, and ‘I can’t help you’.
At least they didn't tell her to wave down a bus...

Are we really back there again? Angry

We never got past it.

You'd think police training would cover the basic legalities of harassment and abuse, though.

Does anyone have a screenshot of the "punch" threat?

MuddlingMackem · 04/07/2024 22:03

Was this police who behaved this way, or call handlers at the contact centre?

The behaviour is appalling, but it's worse in actual serving police officers than in call handlers, so it does matter what they are.

ChishiyaBat · 04/07/2024 22:16

I don't care who they are @MuddlingMackem they should get sacked whatever they are. The language they used and the tone of voice they used was dripping with contempt and hatred for a woman who asked for help because she feared for her safety.
She should have just stayed home and not spoken her mind, never mind think that she could do politics, silly bloody woman!

yourhairiswinterfire · 04/07/2024 22:20

Does anyone have a screenshot of the "punch" threat?

Why, so you can try and justify threats against women some more?

UpThePankhurst · 04/07/2024 22:30

Anyone who at this point doesn't believe that there are those who truly do believe women who will not surrender their rights and equalities to men are scum who shouldn't have access to the law and it is perfectly ok to abandon all professional standards and all basic human rights when it comes to them, and to physically injure them because they deserve it, only has to look at this thread.

Personally, I think behaving like that towards any human being is a morally and ethically terrible thing.

FallinUltra · 04/07/2024 22:37

Northumbria Police have apologised and gave their Professional Standards Department looking into it. So expect “lessons will be learned” and no consequences for the officers.

”THIS is the moment a cop labels a parliamentary candidate who is scared for her safety in the run up to the election a "total d**k" then jokes about punching her. Liz Panton, 69, recorded the female officer denigrating her when she failed to hang up the phone after the OAP spoke to her about a threatening message she'd received. A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "During a private conversation between colleagues, which has been recorded by a member of the public, completely unacceptable comments have been made. "We have contacted the complainant to apologise and inform them that a new officer has been assigned to their case. "We can also confirm this matter is currently being investigated by our Professional Standards Department. "We recognise the important role policing plays during an election period and as a Force are committed to ensuring that all candidates are free to campaign without fear of violence or intimidation. "Furthermore, we want to make it clear that we are here to protect all members of our community, and reports of malicious communications will be taken seriously.”

Looks like a different one. Doesn't the fact not 1 but now 2 of these candidates are having trouble with the police tell you something?

I heard the KJK phone call and tbh I don't think KJK is doing her candidates any favours.

Readers, what does this post tell you? That someone is very keen to blame women for the threats against them if they don’t agree with that poster.

Well of course they should get sacked whoever they are, but call handlers are on calls, police officers are in the field supposedly protecting the public so it's even worse if they are serving officers.

And to be fair, at the Let Women Speak Event in Newcastle, the Northumbria Police officers on duty did a very good job, the protesters were only able to get to any of the speakers after the even had ended.

Well, this is pretty much the same as ‘a cream pie in the face is just comedy, nothing to get upset about.’

Plus ca change.

The candidate is not ‘anti-trans’, she is pro-women and girls. That you continue to frame women who prioritise female people as ‘anti-trans’ really does two things. One is that it shows that extreme trans activists really are misogynistic in their thinking on this topic. And the other is that if women are ‘anti-trans’ to ask for sex to be prioritised, there is now no doubt that the rights of female people are in direct conflict with those being demanded by trans rights activists.

Not that there was much doubt. And not all trans people are extreme trans activists.

Thank you for your continued illustration of just how misogynistic people can be that they victim blame a woman being threatened or worse. It is always good for readers to see this in action on these threads.

Could be. But knowing their wider posting history, I think they are just how they come across. I don’t think many of us would be surprised once you see those wider topics they have been attracted to in the past.

Aren't call handlers essentially the gatekeepers to getting police help though? I have no idea how it works.
I'm glad they did a good job at LWS.

Oh, absolutely they are, so I agree they should be sacked, I just feel it's worse to have to deal with an officer at an incident who felt that way, but I understand if you feel they're on the same level of appalling.
