I've seen some good ideas on other threads for actions we can take after the election. Would love to hear what others are planning and support each other.

So far I have:

  • finish responding to the RSE consultation (deadline is 11 July but saw a suggestion that this could get pulled by a new government this week)
  • ask for a meeting with my MP
  • find a way to raise this issue more at work (I work in a firm that is very Stonewall focussed so not sure yet how to do this, appreciate any ideas from others)
  • join a local GC group (would love to meet others for support in person, any suggestions as to how to find one?)

I think that's a great list. Pressuring local politicians and responding to consultations is always worthwhile.

I would also add that sunlight and keeping receipts has been incredibly beneficial to the cause. Especially with national bodies and charities, and making sure these are published on Mumsnet and elsewhere, and even writing to friendly news outlets if there is a particular angle on a big story.

We're beginning to see how Stonewall is making deals with Labour, don't let this kind of stuff go unnoticed!

And, if you're comfortable, try to engage with friends and family who raise this stuff in real life. Recently I've had a few friends say "isn't it weird Rishi Sunak has picked a fight with David Tennant?" and this was an opening to discuss the issue of sex based rights more widely rather than just nodding along. Let them know what our concerns are and over time you may change some minds at the grassroots level, because it shows they don't need to just follow the programming.

Yes good points thank you. Have had those conversations with some friends & family and so far able to agree to disagree or to show them that this is about more than just toilets!

Also meant to add into my list - speaking to school (again) about their approach

Prepare for a very different kind of demonstration and public awareness raising, should we find ourselves in a society that tries to criminalise women for resisting or even speaking about the loss of their rights and equality and the impact of men upon them.

Large signs with 'women's rights - down with this kind of thing' and loud choruses of 'tits out for the lads' to exhort how no good woman would ever refuse to validate men with her body for example. 'Good women don't need privacy!' signs. 'Exclude and punish the witches who can't share mixed sex spaces to benefit men!' would be another one.

As Eric Morcambe would say: they can't touch you for it. Being heavily sarcastic in a public place is not (yet) illegal.

We have to hope Tories such as Kemi Badenoch, but also Victoria Atkins keep their seats. We're going to need strong, articulate people on the opposition benches. I read that Victoria Atkins might challenge for leadership if she survives. I can definitely see that...she is very credible and comes across very well.

Obviously we also have to hope that both Rosie and Thangam are -re-elected too.

JuneFTW · 04/07/2024 21:07

Yes agreed with that. Fingers crossed for some glimmers of hope tomorrow in amongst all the madness

I'm battling the school over GI. I'm planning on trying to talk around the likely to be elected Lib Dem (who at least understands and respects ss spaces in raoe crisis) to help me.

I'm much heartened this evening after reading the SEEN in publishing thread about all the gains we've made in the public sphere. At our school I learned just today they are rolling back mixed sex toilet provisions because of the slew of parental complaints 💪💪. I really feel like public opinion is turning. This is no longer a single issue, limited to rad fems only.

I would love to join a local GC network but no idea where to find it.

At Virago Women's Workshop we are getting our heads together, we hope to become a bit of a meeting place for plotting direct action and campaigns. We really do need to hold the line now and not lose the ground we have gained. I know Leeds might not be an ideal location for many, but we will try to make it a bit of an event and social too with lots of notice.

Please would anyone let me know how you respond? I found it but couldn’t see how to interact on the form.

That sounds wonderful! Those lucky women of Leeds! It's a bit far for me but hope I can find something a bit closer to home

There so much work to do now. It's overwhelming.

Never be overwhelmed. All of us do what we can little by little and we will prevail. Whether that be talking to friends and family to explain the issues, joining SEEN if we can, supporting litigation crowdfunders, challenging schools teaching, complaining about mixed sex loos and changing rooms, boycotting retailers and writing letters telling them why

The Reistance needs a million little acts of defiance

And remember gender ideology brought down the SNP so Labour is on borrowed time and there will be lots of sunlight on some of the most outlandish views.

we can't all do everything but we can all do something and we just have to keep on doing it.

JuneFTW · 05/07/2024 07:58

I think it's totally understandable to feel overwhelmed at the moment. Today will be a strange day. But I also agree about the little acts of resistance. Lots of great ideas here to get started on and it doesn't all have to be at once.
