Have other parents seen the pictures from this supposedly sports promotion for girls campaign? How on earth is this progressive, freeing from gender stereotypes and truly empowering for girls when all it says is basically that the socially constructed standards of beauty (already oppressive & sexist) trump strength or other qualities when it comes to women 😢🤯sad

It's unfuckingbelievable. What kind of idiot would sign off on this

HollyGolightly4 · 03/07/2024 21:38

It's absolutely appalling and completely regressive. It's also not just parents who should be concerned about this.

DrJump · 03/07/2024 21:38

What is so worrying is that its an underwear campaign and they don't look like they fit. The cup sizes look all wrong.

CatWontBudge · 03/07/2024 21:40

I don't get it. Unless those are professional rugby players who want to show they look great in their skimpies and that a beautiful body can be strong and powerful 🤷🏼‍♀️

DuesToTheDirt · 03/07/2024 21:40

Empowering my arse. If I were a rugby player* and had this suggested to me I'd tell them to stick their campaign where the sun don't shine.

*or anyone, really!

cupcaske123 · 03/07/2024 21:41

I don't get it. I looked this up and the models are rugby players. I think the campaign is for a lingerie brand. Where it's lost me is that it's aimed at teenage girls?!

spikeandbuffy · 03/07/2024 21:43

I kind of get it (don't yell at me, I'm tired!)

There's always been a lot of strong isn't feminine, you can't be sexy/feminine/attractive with muscles and I guess they're trying to show you can, but also it's a lingerie company so they're going to be in lingerie
I like that it's not typical models but also isn't the usual alternative models that you see (snag etc)

However I don't like some of the actual images . Why not just photograph them normally, do a bio about their achievements, how I dunno, exercise makes them feel and add the hashtag

Mumoftwo1316 · 03/07/2024 21:48

Yanbu. As lingerie goes, these are particularly strap-y and bondage adjacent.

I don't know when, how or why it was decided that modesty was antithetical to feminism. And therefore this sort of thing, ie being photographed playing rugby in your underwear, is now feminist.

It's just one of a very long list of the topsy-turviness of this liberal zeitgeist.

Mumoftwo1316 · 03/07/2024 21:49

Like... sex work is empowering. That kind of liberal topsy turviness

HollyGolightly4 · 03/07/2024 21:51

It's not a lingerie advert! It's a campaign to get teenage girls into sports

AlpineMuesli · 03/07/2024 21:54

Can anyone check with their teen girls if these images make them want to play rugby?

maltravers · 03/07/2024 21:54

If they were in sports bras and athletic shorts the message could be that these strong bodies are beautiful, but the lingerie is gross and humiliating.

Igmum · 03/07/2024 21:58

Oh good God. (And why is it that I am fighting the urge to get them cardigans?)

NewGirlinClass · 03/07/2024 22:15

Don't let my BiL see those he will print some off for the garage wall where he works. Not nearly as arty as the Pirelli Calendars of yester year.
FFS What will the Rag-Trade not do? Are their no limits?
(oh! did I miss Sewing Bee tonight)

JanesLittleGirl · 03/07/2024 22:56

Jeez, I just think that I would look ridiculous and feel ridiculous dressed like that.

MarieDeGournay · 04/07/2024 09:58

While I am cynical about companies doing 'worthy' ad campaigns, and unfortunately Women's Aid in Ireland has gone TWAW:
'Women’s Aid’s frontline services are inclusive and are available to women, including transgender women' [but maybe they just have to be, legally?]
these TV ads for an insurance company supporting Women's Aid Ireland show a different take on women being strong and beautiful:
Allianz p.l.c. | The World's Strongest Women | The One Club

It portrays women under threat of violence, which is difficult to watch, but no actual violence. The whole schtick is that they are strong and will survive.

The number onscreen at the end is an Irish number. If you need support and are in the UK I found this on the Women's Aid UK website:
National Domestic Abuse Helpline – 0808 2000 247 (run by Refuge)
I need help - information and support on domestic abuse (womensaid.org.uk)
