Why is DH getting canvassed and I'm not??

Flyers have just come through the door from the Tories and Liberal Democrats (our rural constituency is heavily Tory but the LibDems fancy their chances this time.) They are addressed to DH. I didn't get any. Both of the candidates are men BTW.

My first name comes before his alphabetically so if they are using the electoral register and looking to send one per household, logically they should be addressed to me.

Am I missing something? Is it 1924 rather that 2024?

Or just good old-fashioned misogyny??

I got them addressed to me (f), partner (m) hasn't. I thought was odd

I've been getting the canvassing materials and my OH hasn't. He comes before me alphabetically. Although the LP keeps sending stuff for the woman next door with our address on, which let's me make lots of hilarious jokes about their inability to deliver.

It could be as simple as demographics in your constituency, so perhaps they think that men aged in your DHs age range are more likely to be undecided or whatever group they're interested in targeting. Or it could be sexism.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/06/2024 15:01

I thought that this morning too OP, DP got a personal letter from Labour and I did not. No great loss tbh.

HappierTimesAhead · 28/06/2024 15:02

Same here, DP got a lib dem letter addressed just to him but not one for me

WitcheryDivine · 28/06/2024 15:05

Having once volunteered at an election it’s likely that both those parties think that your H might vote for them, possibly due to getting him on the phone or doorstepping him previously. Parties tend to target those floating voters rather than those they know definitely will (or won’t) vote for them. Perhaps they know you’re an ardent supporter of either them or another party or perhaps they just haven’t spoken to you yet.

FigRollsAlly · 28/06/2024 15:05

Same here - mine arrived a few days later despite my first name also being earlier in the alphabet than DH’s. Probably just the quirks of Royal Mail in our case.

ItsFunToBeAVampire · 28/06/2024 15:05

In South Wales, I got an addressed Labour leaflet and my husband didn't.

YellowHairband · 28/06/2024 15:51

I got one from Labour and DH didn't. No idea why.

We've had generic, non-addressed ones from the Lib Dems.

Needmorelego · 28/06/2024 15:54

When I last filled out the registration form I wrote my husbands name first.
No particular reason why - I just did.
We have had some post that's just addressed to him so I assume they just use the name that's first on the list

murasaki · 28/06/2024 15:56

Labour sent one to me and not DP. Maybe it is alphabetical order? The tories sent one questionnaire to both of us. I emailed him saying we couldn't complete it as we have different views on some issues, e.g. Ulez, and two would be better as we are not a hive mind household. No response.

None of them are really trying.

newpussmum · 28/06/2024 16:25

My DH got an actual letter from one party, I got a flyer addressed to me from another. Interestingly they were opposite to how we both voted last time. (Not that they should know this)

mouse70 · 28/06/2024 16:47

3 Adults in my home, all on electoral register, only person receiving posted election material is my nephew. I am the house owner. To be honest if it was sent to me it would go into bin without reading but does not answer question as to why only one person getting the mail

Needmorelego · 28/06/2024 16:57

@mouse70 saves on money I suppose. Bit daft to send 5 identical leaflets to a home with 5 adults living in it.

Mairzydotes · 28/06/2024 16:58

Perhaps the people who get flyers addressed to them are on the open register?

We've also had mail from Labour and Conservative addressed to every one registered to vote at our address, by name on the same letter (dh, dteen and my name)

anyolddinosaur · 28/06/2024 17:36

No-one in this house is on the open register, still get post addressed to OH.

DinnaeFashYersel · 28/06/2024 17:44

I used to work for a political party. There are different reasons for this.

None of them are about misogyny

Every political party can have one free communication delivered by the post office sent either as:

  1. one per elector
  2. one per household
If you are receiving a leaflet or letter addressed to one person, then you will receive a subsequent but different communication to the other elector(s) in the household. This enables parties to have multiple touchpoints with each household.

Sending different addressed comms to different electors in the household will only be done by the two parties in contention for winning. This is because its more costly and requires more work.

Parties who have no chance of winning will send an unaddressed leaflet to the household.

The other reasons is that you could, in the past, have told a particular party that you don't support them and will vote for someone else, or that you a non-voter. To save money and resources you will have been excluded from their database and they wont send you any further communications.

Or you could have in the past told them you don't want to hear from them and they will exclude you from their database.

StiggyZardust · 28/06/2024 17:46

The lib Dems keep sending mail to me and my 21yr old son. DH doesn't seem to exist.

ChristabelHolloway · 29/06/2024 11:38

Thanks all for your responses, especially DinnaeFashYersel - your post is very enlightening. Good to hear it's not sexism.

@DinnaeFashYersel really interesting insight!

SparklyCyanNewt · 29/06/2024 16:47

It's happening in my house. My husband is getting everything. I get that the candidates only get one hit per household but my husband has never voted and he is not voting this time. I always vote and this is not the way to get mine!

Topofthemountain · 29/06/2024 16:49

Dd1 had a personal one, I'm guessing they have realised that as she has just turned 18 it is her first election and therefore is fresh meat.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 29/06/2024 16:50

I live with my adult son and daughter.

Election materials from the Labour Party are addressed to my dd and I (do they think that we are a couple ?) while ds has received nothing.

The other parties address stuff just to me but I’m not sure if that’s because they get their info elsewhere.

That maybe why he is getting hit.

What happens to the tick sheets after election, is the information held as to who voted and who didn't? Or do I need to put my tinfoil hat away? 👽
