Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Response from Green Party candidate to my email

MiriamMay · 22/06/2024 16:31

I was surprised by this response and wanted to gage others views.

I emailed all of the candidates in my area and asked the questions below.

  • Do you agree that freedom of speech about sex and gender is important?
  • Do you recognise that there are two sexes, male and female, and that the law should acknowledge situations where this distinction matters?
  • If elected, will you stand up for single-sex services such as domestic violence centres and rape crisis services?
  • Do you agree that the Equality Act should be clarified to better protect against discrimination based on sex?
  • Will you commit to not introducing gender self-ID policies through indirect means?
  • Will you meet with "gender-critical" groups and constituents if you are elected to Parliament?

I have only had a reply from the GP candidate. I don’t want to name the candidate because it then identifies which area I live in.

The response I received was:

The Green Party national policy statement is that Transwomen are women and Transmen are men.

I personally think much more nuance in needed in interpretation about the definition of ‘trans’, and how this statement is interpreted. I think the many aspects of the law need clarification to ensure that ‘gender’ and ‘sex’ are not conflated and we must adopt policies that ensure respect and inclusion for everyone, but that absolutely ensure the dignity and fairness for women. Services must be allowed to be offered based on women’s sex as a biological category.

I can honestly say a YES to all of your question below .
Thanks for asking”

It’s still not good enough though and I won’t be voting for the GP, I just thought it was nice to see that there are a few members that haven’t gone completely batshit.

What nuance does 'a man is not a woman ' need?

lcakethereforeIam · 22/06/2024 16:55

Thanks for sharing that. I'm surprised the candidate hasn't been kicked out of the Greens!

Kai125 · 22/06/2024 16:58

I too am surprised they haven't been kicked out the party.

Is it a woman? Just out of interest.

There’s a couple of Green Party candidates I am aware of who are not entirely TWAW. I wonder if there is growing pushback? Must be so stifling being in the GP atm.

AGlinnerOfHope · 22/06/2024 17:06

It’s an honest response, not attempting to fudge the party line.

MrsGalloway · 22/06/2024 17:16

That’s a good response. I really want to vote for my GP candidate who I know and like professionally but don’t feel I can write and ask what her views are.

I got an appalling response to my question about single sex provision and sport from the Lib Dem candidate who basically called me a bigot so can’t vote for her.

Not yet sure who Labour candidate is here but historically very very unlikely to win. I actually think our sitting Tory MP is competent very much a centrist and agrees with my views on this issue but I cannot vote for a Tory government. I feel a bit stuck. If that response came from my GP candidate I’d vote for her.

NamechangeMay24 · 22/06/2024 17:27

That is a good response. I know my local green politicians (local councillors) are also of this view (if not even more to the GC side) and diapause of the national party.

i still can’t vote for them because I think the party view is so appalling.

MiriamMay · 22/06/2024 17:47

She is a women yes

You could create a new Gmail account that doesn't include your full name and email your questions from that account.

MiriamMay · 22/06/2024 20:13

I wrote to all of the other candidates standing in my area from Labour, Conservatives, Libdems and reform but nobody else has even replied. This was two weeks ago so they’ve had plenty of time.

There are many good, sensible people in the Greens.

Just unfortunately a large contingent of gender extremists, too.

My approach is that I'll vote for any candidate whose views are most in accordance with my own concerns - all parties have both trans rights activists and 'gender critical' candidates, as far as I'm aware.

FOJN · 22/06/2024 21:29

I think that's a politicians answer which could be summed up with the sentence, I think the GP policy on self ID is batshit too.

She has no idea how you might share her response so she's covering her arse.

I think it's a good response.

newtlover · 23/06/2024 11:50

this is a good answer and I imagine it would be given by the GP candidate in the constituency adjacent to mine
Like PP I have emailed all my local candidates and not one has replied to me.

Depending on whether you otherwise feel inclined to support green policies, OP, you could perhaps reply that while the official policy is as it is, you are unable to support them with your vote. The people on the inside of these parties who have realist views need to be able to say 'this is losing us votes'- as well of course as 'this is mad'

InvisibleBuffy · 23/06/2024 14:36

I'll agree that there are still a lot of good people in the Greens, some of whom are really putting themselves out there to try combat this madness. It sounds like you've got a decent candidate in her. I wish my Green candidate was sensible but unfortunately not

Chersfrozenface · 23/06/2024 14:44

So what would this candidate do if she was elected as MP and was then whipped by the party in line with its national policy statement on matters involving gender ideology?

Would she defy the whip?

That’s a good question and one I don’t know the answer to.

I don’t want to give too much information but there have been other GP policies that she has gone against. There are a few issues that have been relevant in my local area that after listening to locals she changed her position quite significantly.

However, it’s always a strong possibility that she would be whipped into taking a stance in-line with the GPs national policy. It’s one of the reasons I would not vote for her because I don’t trust the GP at all.

There are also other GP national policies that if the GP has their way would have a devastating affect of the economy in my local area.

so what would the GP do? remove the whip???😂

They could expel the MP from the party. The MP would then have to decide whether to continue as an independent or even defect to another party.

But to get the MP out of the HoC before a general election there would have to be a recall petition signed by 10% of the voters in the constituency and the MP would have to lose the ensuing by-election. I'm not sure the GP are efficient enough to organise such a petition.

cariadlet · 23/06/2024 20:56

That's an excellent response. I can't vote for my Green Party candidate because he thinks gc women like myself are bigots with outdated ideas and that the younger generation are "more accepting" of men in dresses invading our spaces.

I would vote for a Green who gave me that answer and would encourage others to vote for her.

Sensible greens need us to vote for them so that they can show the TRAs in the Party that voters aren't put off by their beliefs.

FYI the Green Party doesn't have a system of whipping like Labour and Tories do. Officially, they don't whip their mps.

But there are currently more than a dozen members of the Green Party who have been suspended or expelled on spurious grounds. The real reason is that they are GC. Any candidate needs to be careful with how they reply to enquiries.

newtlover · 23/06/2024 22:50

yeah, but once elected it won't matter what the party do
