I would not, honestly, usually do this kind of self promotion but I am a long time, name changing denizen of this place and in my defence a) I mentioned this on another thread and people were interested and b) @Boiledbeetle is reading it and told me to do it and so I had to. Also, you might like it.

It's called The Hard Way, and the narrative is me walking some of the oldest roads in England, but while doing that thinking about why it is hard for women to walk alone, why they are meant to stay at home while men stride out and write about nature, and all the artists are men too. And then I discovered that there were all sorts of great women but either they had to shell peas for the Male Great Artists or we forgot that they wrote anything.

Also gerbils. But this username will self-destruct after this thread.

I have started reading your book @Iwrotesomething and so far it's resonating with me very much. I walk solo but am constantly vigilant. Only on chapter one but am really looking forward to getting stuck in!

Thanks for this thread. I've added it to my birthday Wishlist!

Has anyone got a link, because when I search for The Hard Way I just get lots of macho books that look like they're written by ex SAS types popping up?

Apologies if we've had it but this is a cracking read.

Thanks everyone - sorry to have disappeared for a bit, but been really busy.

@crackofdoom It was being pissed off with him that kickstarted the whole book. He just walks off for five days - despite having kids - and slams the door behind him. I worked out how many lists I would have to write before I did this...

To everyone who has mentioned the fear; yes, I think it's complicated. I used to walk out fearlessly and then, after children and probably with hindsight with some added perimenopause, I was afraid. But part of the book is me trying to go back to being that person who was not afraid, and I am definitely more at peace with walking on my own now. I did a talk about the book at the weekend, and the room was very definitely divided.

Also for anyone who likes this sort of thing, can I really recommend the Adventure Queens group on FB. it's a brilliant mix of people who are about to walk across Peru barefoot, and women who want advice on taking their baby camping for the first time.

Just gifted this to my sister today who loves walking and feminism. Perfect!

I downloaded a sample of this and enjoyed the first few pages, loved the writing so much I stopped reading and bought the book to savour. It arrived today, I'm very excited to report.

I've been in poor health for the last few years and have lost the art of walking, I'd love to get it back. Although I also love climbing the fells, I really miss walking for miles on tracks and paths and bridleways. Just going out just to walk.

Also, thank you so much for Make Space for Girls - I saw an article about it and used it as a discussion point in an early SEEN discussion at work ☺️
