Is this hustings question good enough?

It's good to see that Women's Issues are receiving focus here. To help establish the Candidates' grasp on these issues, I'd like to ask them:

  • What is a woman? Can a woman have a penis or a prostate?

This question is important to more than half of the electorate because, when you're looking at rights and protections for women and girls, sex is an extremely relevant factor.

Rather than ask about women I'd ask if they think children should be taught they can be born in the wrong body? If you want to ask about adults ask if they believe people can change sex.

The thread about Maya’s recent issues makes me wonder if something more specific would help, eg

The GMC now list transwomen doctors as female, and therefore evidently supports them providing ‘female only’ care. Do candidates think this is acceptable?

See zibzibara’s post at 9.11 on the thread below for evidence

With the obvious follow up that if they don’t, what are they going to do about it!

It was mainly so they could get married, same-sex marriage not being available at the time.

Wrt inheritance matters, section 16 stipulates that “the descent of any peerage or dignity or title of honour will take place as if a person recognised in the acquired gender were still of the birth gender”. The same rule also applies to inheritance of any property that passes with the peerage or title.

For us plebs, the 'daughter' mentioned in a will may be a male with a GRC. There is a mechanism for the disinherited to appeal but, without looking for case law, I wouldn't fancy their chances. It seems the Lords were keen to preserve their primogeniture and fuck the rest of us.

I think it’s clear that Parliament felt women might apply for a GRC with an ulterior motive (the title) even though we’ve all been told a million times that men would never do that. Not sure if anyone is still saying that now that prison-onset dysphoria has been identified as a thing

I've got meself tied in a right bundle of knots over this, and haven't yet submitted my Q.

I'd bookmarked a reply in the Maya thread, which I thought crystallised the issue of definitions relating to sex in the EA2010, and the thread's been deleted. Everything I've come up with can be weaselled around by pretending not to be sure what men & women are 😬

Maybe asking if they believe people can change sex is the simplest approach.

How about tackling it from the trans angle for example "so everyone can agree that biological women deserve the right to single sex spaces so what will you do to ensure transwomen have a suitable space for themselves without compromising women"

Garlicker · 19/06/2024 16:22

That may well 'work' better, @BaronessEllarawrosaurus, but the focus is on women and girls (female humans) and I don't want to make it all about looking after trans people.
