Who is best to vote for based on a gender critical stance in the Irish election?

There's a discussion about that here:

But there's not a great selection. I'm in Ireland and I'm still not sure who I'm going to vote for. I used to vote Green, Labour, SocDem - Greens are obviously nuts on this issue, Labour have said they don't want GC people to vote for them (and Labour senator Annie Hoey has tweeted that "Terfs can eat coal"), and SocDems have a rugby-playing TW who works in Teni as a candidate.

Can we have a thread to discuss the upcoming MEP Election candidates for Ireland? | Mumsnet

European elections coming up on 7th June. Ireland has 14 seats to fill... I know it's probably early days, but I got a shiny leaflet in the door from...

If it's because you're leftwing I suppose you could write "Leftwing + gender critical = Nobody to vote for". But would anyone take any notice, is the thing.

A list of who not to vote for might be helpful.
All are listed as signatures on the Come out 4 Europe lgbtqi pledge. I am a bit surprised not to see Mick Wallace or Claire Daly here, as I kind of associate them as being affiliated with Ming, but the others aren't surprising.

Bríd Smith Ireland Not affiliated

Regina Doherty Ireland EPP

Barry Andrews Ireland Renew

Brian O’Boyle Ireland The Left

Cian Prendiville Ireland The Left

Pauline O’Reilly Ireland Greens/EFA

Aodhán Ó Ríordáin Ireland S&D

I forgot to add the pledge. The last part is a bit eyebrow raising.

Thanks @Gettalife . It's all a bit unspecific apart from the last one which, as you say, is concerning.

Mermoose · 04/06/2024 07:24

I'll post this on the other discussion thread too.

The bit about using credible and responsible.source of information should be a good thing.

Unfortunately in light of the rest I suspect they mean 'ideologically approved' rather than 'scientifically robust'.

I think it is similar to the manner in which Self-ID was originally introduced in Ireland, which Dentons described as under the radar. This seems to be an attempt to get members of the European Parliament to commit to the same tactics in introducing laws that be unpopular with gender critical groups. It is a concern to see a pledge being signed where the signatories agree to keep work being done on behalf of any specific lobby group out of the public eye. It suggests that this work might be unpopular with other groups and denies them a right to voice their opposing view, until, at a minimum, very late in the process. Am I very naive in thinking it seems very undemocratic?

Wow, that's almost unbelievable - but that's becoming more the norm nowadays!
