Great news, in a country where women have suffered and do suffer greatly from MVAWG.

'She told cheering voters: "For the first time in the 200 years of the [Mexican] Republic, I will become the first woman president of Mexico."
She said, it was an achievement not just for her but for all women.
"I've said it from the start, this is not just about me getting [to the top office], it's about all of us getting here."
She added: "I won't fail you."'
...
'Edelmira Montiel, 87, said that she was grateful to be alive to see a woman elected to the top office.
"Before, we couldn't even vote, and when you could, it was to vote for the person your husband told you to vote for. Thank God that has changed and I get to live it," she told Reuters news agency, referring to the fact that women were only allowed to vote in national elections in 1953.'

Claudia Sheinbaum

I don't know anything about her, but I hope she makes headway in banning the Mexican baby trade/exploitation of women (known by some as "surrogacy").

Brava 👏

Well done Claudia Sheinbaum. And she's a brave woman to take on that job!

I'm afraid I'm very ignorant about the politics, but this sounds like fantastic news.

However, I heard the phrase "woman president" four times on the radio this morning, and it's grammatically very jarring! Surely "female president" makes more sense? In as much as "woman" is a noun, and "female" is an adjective? I can't imagine ever saying a "man president" (or even a "man nanny" or "man nurse" if we're looking for historically/stereotypically female jobs).

It sounds so incredibly wrong, it got me wondering if there's a reason they're tying themselves in knots to avoid saying the word "female"?

It seems like it was a 2 woman race with her main competitor also being female. That must be fairly rare.

She sounds like she has a tough job ahead reading that article.

I hadn't realised it was 2 women leading the race. That's excellent.
