Bonus hole broke

Jo's Trust has gone under, with immediate effect. I'm sorry for the people they support, but is this because of the bonus hole fiasco last year? Alienate your core group and pay the price? Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust | Cervical Cancer Charity (jostrust.org.uk)

I've just given the site a cursory glance and almost all references to 'women' have been removed, and they stress they REALLY want(ed) LGBTQIA+++XYZ people to work for them.

When will these organisations realise that the tq+ "community" is actually vanishingly small? By centering this group they alienate the vast majority of people and thus end up with a huge decrease in donations.

Seriestwo · 24/05/2024 21:38

They did really good work, then they didn’t and now women who have cervical cancer gave less help.

fucking idiots.

In addition to the above this line:

and those who identify as having a disability

Glad they have gone when they have the audacity to print shit like this - no-one identifies as having a disability unless they are a lying charlatan you either have a disability or you don't and this crap language is very damaging to those who are disabled.

DisforDarkChocolate · 24/05/2024 21:57

I was never a fan but 'bonus hole' is frankly sickening.

ArabellaScott · 24/05/2024 21:59

It's still up. Offensive, misogynist language

Cattenberg · 24/05/2024 21:59

I think it would be a good idea to have a webpage about how medical staff can make trans men and non binary women feel more comfortable and able to engage with the health service.

However, it would be a bad idea to make all health information inclusive of trans and non-binary identities if it makes the information less clear. As many as 40% of UK women can’t correctly identify a cervix on a simple anatomical diagram. Women who speak English as a second language and women with learning difficulties are in particular need of health information which is clear and easy to understand, not waffle which obfuscates the truth to spare others’ feelings.

While you're probably right about that wording, there is a possible nuance here. Not all people who objectively have some form of disability choose to 'identify as disabled.'

😲 shocking! (I will admit when I wake up in the morning my brain identifies me as fit, healthily and not disabled. Then my body wakes up and vehemently disagrees with it!)

As for the charity... Go woke, go broke!

This has been a common usage around disability for many years, it predates gender ideology.

I suspect it very much fed into the thinking around identity language actually, but the "disabled community" to the extent that such a group exists has generally supported this kind of language.

BlackForestCake · 24/05/2024 23:50

All the "identify as" stuff started off in a positive way. It was meant to stop gatekeeping, so that nobody was sitting in judgement about which other people were disabled, or who counted as black, or whatever.

But clearly not having any gatekeeping at all doesn't work either...

"Bonus hole – An alternative word for the vagina preferred by some trans men and/or non-binary people with a cervix. It is important to check which words someone would prefer to use."

Fucking hell. These people.

Who the fuck would want to use a charity that describes a vagina in those terms?

You absolutely don't have to use sexist, misogynistic language, just because a person wants you to.

Sparklybutold · 25/05/2024 00:16

Nearly ended up working for this charity. Glad I chose not too!

To be fair to them, most of the site is written in the second person, and they do use women, eg women are usually born with a cervix, then go on to say some trans men and non-binary people will also have one, which i think is reasonable enough. I agree that glossary is problematic, but I think it's been blown out of proportion in relation to the valuable work they were doing and I'm sorry they've gone under. I was on a working group with a couple of their people last year and they were really helpful and knowledgeable, and didn't ever suggest that the word women should be taken out of what we were writing.

songaboutjam · 25/05/2024 01:47

you either have a disability or you don't

Some people (like me) are in this grey area where we have a condition that makes our life more difficult but it isn't severe enough to be clear-cut. Usually people with low support needs autism / ADHD but relatively mild chronic fatigue or mild mobility difficulties could also fall into this category.

I would generally say no I'm not really that disabled, but there are certain circumstances where I might say yes.

Chersfrozenface · 25/05/2024 06:37

The problem with "identify as" is that many, if not most, people now read it as "claim to be something one probably isn't or can't possibly be".

(I like using 'one' - it doesn't have any of the overtones that 'you' and 'they' have.)

If I remember correctly, the biggest irony is that it was them who did the research you mention, and campaigning about the importance of reaching those women! I can't compute the dissonance of carefully gathering up evidence that huge numbers of women don't know they have a cervix, working out that this is due to so many real-world disadvantages such as poor education, learning disabilities, weak English, isolation, etc... and then pivoting completely to "Righteous Word Salad For Polishing the Hurty Feelz Of The Sacred Caste."

Yes, it's one of the many words that's been bent and broken,

Yep.

People use all sorts of weird and crude slang for genitalia.

Why a medical organisation would think it suitable to suggest certain specific, offensive, sexist words is baffling.

It comes across as a deliberate insult to women.

‘Good faith’ is the magic ingredient, without that no approach will work.

Front hole – An alternative word for the vagina preferred by some trans men and/or non-binary people with a cervix. It is important to check which words someone would prefer to use.

What’s extra concerning here is that the vagina isn’t the front hole at all! They seem to not understand the female anatomy at all!

As for bonus hole… I have no words! 🤬🤬

I have a disability. 'Identify as' is insulting to me as it implies choice. I didn't fucking choose to have this disability and I certainly can't identify out of it!

'Front/bonus hole' is referring to the anus. Transmen are being compared to gay men. I imagine many gay men might say this was homophobic, as well as misogynist.
