Can I just draw your attention to his piece on rainbow lanyards? He sets his thoughts out so clearly, I think this piece clarifies the current situation very well.

Legal commentator and general "wrong type of gay". Writes about LGB matters, society, law, moral and social questions. Garrulous and wordy, guilty of the odd metaphor.

He's great, isn't he. I like this:
“puberty is a human right and puberty is a gay right”.

PangolinPan · 21/05/2024 22:20

@DuesToTheDirt I agree! It's just virtue signalling. As Dennis says, straight people doing a very small thing to make them think they're the best allies ever while nothing actually changes for people who victimised for their sexual orientation.

NonCrimeHakeIncident · 21/05/2024 22:34

In any case, he didn't tell them he thought they were weird, he just treated their problems.

Which is exactly his job and how it should be. In some ways the very fact of a rainbow lanyard or similar display might make me worry about their professionalism, discretion and bias tbh - I remember I once saw a locum GP who happened to be very close to a mutual friend of ours. The GP reassured me they wouldn’t tell the friend about the medical issue I had. I had taken it as given they wouldn’t tell anyone, but the fact they reassured me made me a) think about it in the first place and b) made me worry more about the whole issue and who might find out or what else the GP might tell the friend or other people.

May be outing myself here, but I always wear a sparkly rainbow headband at work to keep my hair off my face. I bought it years ago. I once got asked it it was a Pride thing. (No, I just like It!) It looks nothing like a Pride flag anyway. I do also wear a homemade necklace in the Suffragette colours. It annoys me that rainbow anything = Pride flag these days. Wonder if those of us in the LGB crowd could go back to using the original Pride flag with eight stripes? Instead of the monstrosity that's the 'progress' flag.

I agree with his point but many NHS staff have rainbow badges etc because it became a symbol of hope and public support during Covid. I have a BMA lanyard that is rainbow patterned. Although that is different sort of political.

Dennis, like Mr Menno, Gareth Roberts, Simon Fanshaw, Malcolm Clarke, Simon Edge ( and others ) are some of the few gay men who have cottoned onto the huge threat from gender ideology to gay men, and to women and have been very vocal about it. I really appreciate their input and it finally feels like we have a similar alliance between gay men and women that we did in the eighties when we were fighting the AIDS crisis. There are unfortunately quite a few gay men that are totally TWAW, but it's been so gratifying to see some v intelligent, principled gay men fighting back against it. And yes, they see the threat against young gay men, but they also have the intelligence, insight and compassion to raise awareness about what is happening to women too and for that I am grateful.

littleburn · 22/05/2024 06:23

Completely agree @Appalonia.

Excellent post Appalonia.
They're powerful advocates in this grim fight to safeguard young gays and lesbians.

I don't know. I respect his right to his opinion based on his experience. But I can't get up in arms about lanyards often worn by well meaning people. If I do I run the risk of perpetuating the whole microagressions mindset of seeking to be offended.
Rainbow washing bothers me more. Virtue signalling without significant constructive action. But even then, what am I going to do about any of it? I suppose gather my energy to take the actions I can and support those being constructive.

Surely a lanyard is a prime example of "Virtue signalling without significant constructive action".
