Latest Labour drama. It sounds like the meeting wasn't up to much

Rosie :; “Not quite true. I told a whip that I had not been spoken to for two-and-a-half years, when Natalie Elphicke was welcomed with open arms. I got 17 minutes and still no apology for being briefed against by head of comms or investigated for 12 months.”

Though we can expect TRAs to go crazy over Starmer talking to the "witch".

Is this tied to Annelise Dodds finally meeting LGB Alliance? That situation is escalating there too:

I think a bunch of ferrets are reversing as the implications of the Cass Report sink in and senior Labour figures are trying to cover themselves. Especially as Scottish Labour look to be attempting to blame gender stuff on the SNP/Greens as an election ploy. Meanwhile Welsh Labour are in an utter state.

Labour’s Rosie Duffield complains Keir Starmer offered ‘no apology’ during talks

The Canterbury MP said she had spoken to the Labour leader for 17 minutes after telling a whip she had not been talked to in two-and-a-half years.

I think they're in "let's neutralise any potentially difficult areas before the election" mode. Cass definitely feeds into this, and maybe they've started to pay attention to Deborah Mattinson's polling, though they've happily ignored it when it suits up til now.

My suspicion is still that Starmer will come up with one of his word salads to cover himself until the election. I'm not at all confident what Labour will do afterwards, especially since we don't know what the new intake of MPs will look like.

But they must calculate it will be enough for women who have been desperate to vote Labour but just holding back on this issue. Some baby steps in the direction of sanity will give them a permission structure.

anyolddinosaur · 15/05/2024 21:24

Well I'm keen to vote Labour but the tories are finally getting to grips with schools and Starmer cant even apologise to Rosie. So I'm going to need more from labour if they want my vote. It's in the too little too late category at the moment.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 15/05/2024 21:31

I'll wait and see what their response is to the schools issue. That's where they can be most effective but only if they centre children rather than trans lobbyists.
They've got themselves on the wrong side of history with this one but positively appear to be slowly reverse ferreting. And that's good.

Greengablesfables · 15/05/2024 21:41

‘..positively appear to be slowly reverse ferreting’

God what a sad state of affairs. 😔 Not that they are doing that, but that we are so pathetically grateful about any sign of fcking positive action towards women, from Labour.

No, i’m not waiting. They’ve not got my vote.

Sounds about right. The gender war inside Labour is going to get very messy. I think the manifesto battle will be interesting to see. I think we will see some TRAs leaving the party because they hate compromise.

Meanwhile Rosie scored in Parliament today by raising safety in single sex care in hospitals:

Sex Matters [with footage]
Thank you RosieDuffield1 for your question today on sex-same care, accurate data collection, and for bringing attention to the work of WomensRightsNet and Jo Phoenix.

This follows on from her great work on the Birth Trauma report:

Rosie's meeting is getting a lot of media attention. So now Starmer will be asked why he didn't apologise. The saga continues.

Rosie keeps winning:

MP calls for ‘data based on sex’ after reported hospital assaults on women
Labour MP Rosie Duffield referred to a report that found that more than 6,500 sexual assaults have been committed in hospitals in England and Wales.

Remember this all kicked off when two weeks ago Starmer admitted on TV that Rosie knew basic female biology and he didn't, but then he lied about meeting with her with the words:

“Biologically, she of course is right about that.”

Rosie Duffield right to say only women have a cervix, says Starmer

Lloyd Russell Moyle is sitting right beside Rosie as she asked the question in HoC and he’s not gurning, eye rolling, or glaring daggers in her direction. Is this significant?

He’s a bully. He’s trying to intimidate her. He’s an awful person.

I reckon it is. He ended up being the poster boy for the misogynistic bullies - showcasing everything that women say happens when we have the temerity to speak out. So him managing to control his emotions and behave in a socially appropriate way is progress.

He looks like he's forcing himself to try and keep his face neutral as he knows the camera will be on him. It's not a natural neutral face and he doesn't look comfortable. His face is more like a when you are trying to hold a fart in face.

Marjoriefrobisher · 16/05/2024 11:40

I don’t imagine Sir Snooty does apologies, particularly to women.

JellySaurus · 16/05/2024 15:42

Still not going to vote for them. All I see is popularity-chasing. No real commitment to improving people's lives. I don't care what wishy-washy semi-acknowledgments the leadership make, what crumbs of 'jam tomorrow' they offer, I don't believe any of it. It is hypocrisy. It's all about power and control to them. Saying anything that will get them into power and allow them to impose their doctrines upon the country. Once elected, they will give women's rights, children's rights and the rights of vulnerable people, the same lip-service as they have done until now. The hierarchy will be restored: "of course women's rights are important, but male women's rights are more important".

That sounds right to me. He's saying the bare minimum to lure back some of the female voters, but he's keeping it to a level that won't offend the trans mob, imagining the public fight that they'd be guaranteed to kick up if he went too far. Whereas women, oh they'll never make much of a fuss. They don't even all agree among themselves.

If he'd commit himself to a GC position that he couldn't take back, it might be time to trust him, but he's far from that point now. If Labour wins the election, I expect the trans side will be rejoicing.

INeedAPensieve · 16/05/2024 20:40

I'm not voting for Labour. The leaders have not come out with an actual proper statement about the significance of the Cass report.

It shows me they are just trying to ride it out until no one is talking about it anymore. I hope that this isn't the case but I suspect it is.

Anyway I think for the first time ever I won't be voting for anyone.
