A thread regarding the situation in Italy regarding paediatric “gender” medicine
The new president of AIFA, (the Italian medicines agency), Robert Giovanni Nisticò has ordered the cessation of puberty blockers being prescribed to “dysphoric” children due to new evidence showing the permanent and harmful side effects.
The Italian Department of Health has ordered an inspection of every hospital in Italy where puberty blockers were prescribed. This is most likely to see if protocol was ignored at other hospitals and not just Careggi.
AIFA guidelines state that a child must be assessed by a neuropsychiatrist prior to puberty blockers being prescribed. This protocol was openly ignored at Careggi and it was enough for a child to declare a trans identity for PBs to be prescribed
The Careggi scandal is in the hands of the Florence prosecutor who will decide whether charges will be brought against the individual doctors, the hospital and the regional health authority.
Due to the new evidence (Cass Review) that the evidence for gender affirming care is scarce and of a low quality, from a medical legal point of view, invasive paediatric gender medicine is now completely untenable.
Similar to England, there are many private clinics offering puberty blockers to vulnerable children. This is a problem which still needs addressing but it is safe to say that sanity is returning to Italy.
It should be mentioned that many Italian doctors, especially in the south, refused to prescribe puberty blockers to children and instead chose to take a less invasive therapeutic approach.
