Watchdog urges self-ID for trans prisoners

An international prisons watchdog has called for a policy of “self-ID” to allow transgender prisoners to be held in jails of their adopted gender.

The call flies in the face of practice in England and Wales, where the large majority of trans women prisoners are held in male jails – and all trans men in custody are held in female jails.

In its latest annual report, published in April, the Council of Europe’s Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) said it had seen “widely divergent” approaches to the placement of transgender prisoners across the territory it monitors.

It said: “The Committee considers that if a person self-identifies as transgender during the prison admission procedure, then this should be sufficient per se for the prison to treat the person as such in all decisions taken concerning that person, including placement decisions.”

Reflecting concerns that biologically-male prisoners cannot safely be housed in female jails, it added: “If, after an individualised risk assessment, there are exceptional security or other reasons to accommodate them elsewhere, those reasons should be clearly documented, and subject to regular review.”

Why do none of these organisations ever call for separate transgender prison places? Why must they always try to insert males into female spaces?

Has the Council of Europe’s Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) considered that locking women up with males might, ya know, constitute Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

Or are the women just seen as props?

Initial risk assessment - he cant be held in the female prison on account of him being a man.

Regular reviews - hes still a man.

How would it even be possible to devise individual risk assessments? The men more likely to be low risk are thd men who wouldnt want to be in the female estate in the first place.

So women prisoners will be subjected to inhuman and degrading treatment.

But they aren't anywhere near as important as the men, obviously.

And this is suggesting all transmen prisoners are jailed with men.

What could possibly go wrong?

An individualised (?) risk assessment for the man, but no risk assessment for the women. 🤷‍♀️

We need our leaders to start saying openly to these people: "You are mad. We will not be listening to you further on any topic."

When posting this I sort of assumed the UK was no longer signed up to this european initiative. But maybe we are?

Not saying its because of Brexit (hardly) but does seem some changes that are starting to happen re women's rights vs. trans rights would have had an additional bureaucratic level to fight through.

I guess The Right Side of History would simply assert that the old-fashioned type of women can't be subject to inhumane treatment, because they're not fully human but merely partially-sentient support bipeds for the proper people.

Did no-one in their meetings say 'but what about degrading and inhuman treatment for women?' which constant fear of the risk of rape from a male penis must surely be - as has been described by women prisoners incarcerated with male bodies.

Has Afghanistan self-Id=ed as part of Europe and they've put the Taliban as chair of this committee or something?

Ok Alan, and what are the amplified issues affecting women after you have got your way and had men locked in with them?

I work with MtF sex offenders. Some of whom identify as trans and we do have those who are legally recognised as female but due to their commitment to retaining their penis, despite their protests, they are currently legally required to remain in the prison of their biological sex.

Sex offenders are some of the most manipulative, abusive prisoners we have in this country. Their whole offending behaviour is built on their ability to condition people into doing what they want. The whole trans debate has given some very dangerous people a platform to justify their behaviour, negatively impacting those few genuinely gender dysphoric people unable to quietly live their lives in their preferred identity for fear of being targeted.

Identify as any gender you care. Prisons are segregated by SEX. So they can stay exactly where they are (i.e. in the male estate).

It sounds really depressing / concerning to have to manage the situation.

Although what you describe, ie the loud mouth manipulators who have usurped the difficulties of the very small % of people who suffer gender disphoria making their lives more difficult.
