Has anyone read ' Moths'? A novel where most men are wiped out by a disease and what comes after....

It's a really interesting book, about what would a society look like without men being dominant. I actually preferred it to
' The Power' as to me, that book just replicated the male power structures and didn't really say anything interesting about how women could create something different. I don't want to give away too much about the plot, but I highly recommend it as a fascinating read, especially as she's just written a sequel to it. If anyone's read it, I'd love to hear your thoughts, and if not, have a read!

"As dystopian thrillers go, Moths is breathtakingly good, full of tense, adrenaline-fuelled action, emotionally resonant moments and conversations that shine a light on what is broken in the present and must change for the better in the future, and how humanity as a species is balancing on the precipice with something as deceptively simple as the beat of a moth’s wings standing between us and possible annihilation."

Read it a while ago and quite liked it (raised an eyebrow at the implausibly perfectly passing MTF friend, but the handling of the character is interesting).

Would definitely check out the sequel.

Looks interesting, will put it on my "nominate for book group" list!

Read it? I think we're in it!

Ooh, that sounds right up my street- I will add it to my 'To Read' pile.

Sounds a bit like "Y the Last Man"- an American TV series which I think was based on a comic book. Every mammal with a Y chromosome suddenly dies at the exact same time, except for one man and his (male) monkey. It was cancelled after one series, which was a real shame as I thought it was fantastic.

I'd forgotten the title of this book but read it and enjoyed it a while ago. Interested in the sequel now too. Off to add it to my holiday reading selection

I don't see why it's described as dystopian fiction

I thought The Power was absolute junk. It was an interesting idea but instead of examining how the threat of violence undepins evey aspect of male-female relations and how liberating it would be for women if they suddenly gained that power, it just turned the women into instant gangsters from a story that would have been binned by Martina Cole. I felt like I'd been conned into buying an airport crime novel.

I didn't like the Power ( although I thought the framing device and artefact notes was good)

However I think the point of the novel was to put male readers in the headspace of the type of threat of overpowering that women experience.

However I doubt many men read the book.

The Power as a TV series was completely ruined by the insertion of a transwoman character and some guff about the estrogen he took activating the skein. Which sounded a bit like "transwoman have periods" nonsense. It also means the whole thing with Roxy's brother wasn't needed.

I loved the start of The Power as a novel with the women sharing the secret and especially the enslaved women freeing themselves. But the gangster elements and the women only nation killing all men felt a bit "women can be just as bad as men, women can be just as violent".

I've started Toxic and it's interesting. Calling the older women dollies etc. I'm only about half way through though so reserve judgement

There are two novels called The Men by Sandra Newman and The End of Men by Christina Sweeney-Baird which are based on the same premise - both excellent. Adding The Moth to my long list, thanks OP.

You mat wish to read the short story 'Consider her ways' by John Wyndham based on the same premise.
I'll definitely try Moths

I really liked Toxxic, loved how the older women who held the memory of what men were actually like, tried to disrupt it. Reminded me a bit of what's happening now...
