'The government of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the premature release of 11 men who were convicted for the gangrape of a pregnant Muslim woman and murder of 14 members of her family, including her three-year-old daughter, according to a court document.'

Unimaginable ordeal for Bilkis Bano. What a brave, brave woman.

'"How can justice for any woman end like this? I trusted the highest courts in our land. I trusted the system, and I was learning slowly to live with my trauma. The release of these convicts has taken from me my peace and shaken my faith in justice," she wrote, appealing to the Gujarat government to "undo this harm" and "give me back my right to live without fear and in peace".'

There are times when I wonder how women refrain from tearing down the structures that oppress them and burning everything down.

This is one of them.

I applaud the courage of Bilkis Bano and acknowledge that it emphatically shouldn't be necessary. We keep hearing #NAMALT. It's past time that those men who identify as #NAMALT to step up and do something about the structures that favour MWALT.

Yes, indeed.

The BBC have a whole section on the Indian election, currently. This was one article.

This is another:

It's thoroughly depressing that all the political unrest and tension seems to inevitably result in extra suffering for women, and their children.

Yes. Sad Thank you for posting this. It really is depressing as it feels like women's rights and protections around the world are spiralling down the drain.

All I can say is that overall it's always been like this ... I don't think that's cheerful, I'm sorry, but I don't think it's especially a worsening spiral.

And at least there is a bit of reporting on it and outrage against it. It's a glimmer of hope that nonetheless matters.

This is surely part of his anti-Muslim agenda?. I presume these were Hindu men attacking a Muslim woman and family?

He is stoking division and tension between those communities and this is part of that.

ArabellaScott · 04/05/2024 08:32

That was the implication, pathend. The attack came after riots.

I've also just noticed it's old news - the BBC had put it on front page of a feature about the Indian elections, but the article is from 2022.

Since it was published, I'm glad to say the Court overturned the release order:

Apologies I didn't realise this before, that has been a confusing presentation from the BBC, who for.some reason didn't put the most recent article front page. I suppose they were looking at Modhi's history. But they should have clarified and updated the article, imo.

I am still upset since watching the India’s Daughter documentary about the gang rape and murder of Jyoti Singh. The attack was horrendous enough but the interviews with men on their attitudes was the real shocker. A lawyer saying she was equally at fault for her murder. ‘It takes two hands to clap’.
I had visited India a couple of times but will never go back.
It’s also the only place in my long life I have been physically groped by a strange man. Twice.
Am glad the release didn’t go ahead. Strength to the people in India who are trying to fight these backward attitudes to women.

mach2 · 04/05/2024 08:44

Given the nature of the crimes, I'm amazed that these men were not given the rope.

I was in India when that happened. I read it in the breakfast newspaper and it's the first time that a story has made my eyes leak.

Apparently, they were shitting themselves when they went to the gallows. I'm glad they felt the terror that they had subjected that poor girl to.

Modi and the BJP are right-wing Hindus. Their attitudes to non-Hindus are unpleasant and they seem to constantly underplay the mistreatment of women.

As Grammarnut says, Modi and the BJP are Hindu extremists and they particularly hate Muslims. The vile attackers were Hindu and their victims Muslim, hence no death sentence and him trying to have them released.
