Unregulated online clinic gave teen dangerous hormone dose

Not sure if anyone has started a thread on this. GenderGP gave a teenager a high dose of hormones without the child speaking to a doctor.

This is so awful. My son was recommended to go to GenderGP by his therapist 🤬

Vampirelovebite · 02/05/2024 17:15

Why are Gender GP recruiting so heavily right now - writers, PR people etc?

Vampirelovebite · 02/05/2024 17:23

So yet again we have an autistic teen. This child is also anorexic. And has been sectioned.

Yet the BBC plays along and calls the child 'him'. It's not only stupid and inappropriate, it's also inaccurate reporting.

Do they really (really really) think that this autistic, anorexic, mentally ill child also just happens to be born in the wrong body (!!) - nothing to see here?!

Judgement is available on bailii if you want to read it in full.

Lots going on here including divorced parents who didn't agree, autism and another serious mental illness.

I'm pleased to see the BBC reporting this but was also very disappointed to see the use of male pronouns.

It's disappointing/inaccurate enough when it's a crime by a transwoman but this is another level of wrong.

David Bell articulates perfectly that referring to a child as "transgender" forcloses the situation and that this is harmful. By using opposite-sex pronouns, the BBC has echoed what happened in the hospital, by validating the child's trans identity. The consequence in the media is that it's difficult for the public to understand the story and maintains a cognitive dissonance, where the takeaway is that testosterone is probably the right answer, just not this much. A far better approach would have been no pronouns, following a clear introduction that this was a female who identifies as a male. The Telegraph went for this approach (link to follow).
The consequence in the hospital of the cognitive dissonance may well have been far more serious: if the hospital records had clearly stated sex, would the child's testosterone levels have still been compared to a males? Unlikely.

There's another thread about this case.

The Telegraph takes a similar approach, avoiding pronouns except in a direct quote from the Mermaids counselor. They also add the worrying detail that the court had to use an expert witness from Australia because no UK endocrinologist was willing to take part.

I’m not surprised an Australian Endo was willing, it is obvious that the vast majority of the Australian medical and political establishment are captured.

Beowulfa · 03/05/2024 07:12

Everyone who pretends this seriously unwell child is male is compounding the problem. Does a teenager need to die before this medical negligence is taken seriously?

BonfireLady · 03/05/2024 10:14

Thanks for posting this. It's a well written article.
My only (I think) reservation is that the story of "Maria's" detransitioned daughter doesn't make it clear enough that the irreversible damage that she has suffered is as a result of taking testosterone. Perhaps there is more damage due to it being grey market stock but either way, there will be significant damage and risk to her future health. So the grey market origin should be a footnote regarding this aspect.

I'm not sure if they have only just changed the "please pay us money for our journalism" boilerplate, but it's the first time I've noticed this version. It reads like a hostage note!!! If they keep producing stories like this and ditch the unchallenged virtue signalling regarding gender identity belief, I'll gladly pay them money.

Jolyon and the Good Law Project seem to object to the NHS (CAMHS) advising children against using unregulated providers like GenderGP.

How can the NHS identify and help vulnerable, distressed kids who have been stuck on the GIDS waiting list for years if TRAs and their organisations try to block any initiative?

Inviting young trans people or their families in, on misleading pretences, to collect data, and perhaps refer them to safeguarding, is sinister and absolutely not what the National Health Service is for.

I read this judgement yesterday when I was looking for the details to watch the Allison Bailey EAT. It was an appalling read.

Autistic, anorexic, been sectioned. Clearly a very unwell child with multiple comorbidities.

After the exhaustive search the court finally found an expert willing to advise on the dosage given to the 15 year old girl.

It was 2 x the amount given to an adult as a first dose. No follow up blood tests, also gave them a prescription for puberty blockers which thankfully wasn't used.

Expert also suspected illegal dosing between official prescribed doses as their levels were remaining very high.

Gender GP really needs to be put out of business before they kill any more children.

LaLoba · 03/05/2024 12:32

The very upsetting thing about this is that when a mentally ill, anorexic girl doesn’t want to be female anymore, it seems to me that the possibility of abuse should be the first thing to rule out. I know from bitter experience how families will close ranks to label the child the problem. Poor girl, she should have been protected by so many people involved.

Oblomov24 · 03/05/2024 12:53

None of this surprises me. Shame.
