Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I know! I had to check the date to make sure we weren’t floating on a lilo off the island of San Serif .

It really does feel that the brakes have been applied, the Trans Train is slowly juddering to a stop and with any luck we will be able to engage reverse gear soon.

And in the Grauniad itself, not even the Observer!

So brilliantly laid out, bravo David!

unintended101 · 26/04/2024 11:06

Wow, a Guardian article I will read

Rainbowshit · 26/04/2024 11:07

Brilliant to see it all laid out like that.

murasaki · 26/04/2024 11:32

Excellent article. Really going into the physical problems ops can induce, no mincing of words re euphemisms for surgery and clear on the harassment whistle blowers faced. I had to double check it was the guardian.

Runskiyoga · 26/04/2024 12:01

It's really interesting googling JKR this week and looking at the news headlines that have all changed from clickbaity 'nasty JKR' via 'why JKR will/won't be arrested' to 'everyone apologises to JKR' and now 'everyone agrees with JKR'.

Terref · 26/04/2024 12:03

It feels like years since I've been pleasantly surprised by the Guardian.

duc748 · 26/04/2024 12:06

I know! I had to check the date to make sure we weren’t floating on a lilo off the island of San Serif .

😄

Very welcome, of course.

'The policy of “affirmation” – that is, speedily agreeing with a child that they are of the wrong gender – was an inappropriate clinical stance brought about by influential activist groups and some senior gender identity development service (Gids) staff,'

Terref · 26/04/2024 12:12

'children suffered thrice over: through not having all their problems properly addressed; by being put on a pathway for which there is not adequate evidence and for which there is considerable risk of harm; and lastly because children not unreasonably believed that all their problems would disappear once they transitioned'

duc748 · 26/04/2024 12:12

I'm sure Mumsnetters are sharpening their quills in response! 😀

Terref · 26/04/2024 12:19

'Those who say a child has been “born in the wrong body”, and who have sidelined child safeguarding, bear a very heavy responsibility
...
'Those of us who have raised these concerns [...] have been silenced by trans rights activists who have had considerable success in closing down debate, including preventing conferences going ahead. Doctors and scientists have said that they have been deterred from conducting studies in this area by a climate of fear, and faced great personal costs for speaking out, ranging from harassment to professional risks and even, as Cass has experienced, safety concerns in public.

The pendulum is already swinging towards a reassertion of rationality. Cass’s achievement is to give that pendulum a hugely increased momentum. In years to come we will look back at the damage done to children with incredulity and horror.'

I appreciate I've basically quoted the whole article. It's devastating to see it laid out clearly and succintly.

I hope every person who is unclear on what's been going on reads it.

‘This isn’t how good scientific debate happens’: academics on culture of fear in gender medicine research

Cass review found professionals in the field are scared to discuss views amid risk of reputational damage and online abuse

I'm almost looking forward to the batshit letters and articles we will undoubtedly see in the Guardian in response to this that they'll publish for balance.

lanadelgrey · 26/04/2024 13:02

Well as I often say, write in with praise for the piece to show that there is an appetite for more evidenced reporting on the subject rather than emotive handwringing and suggestions of weird conspiracies
Given the letter last week: https://www.theguardian.com/society/2024/apr/18/hilary-cass-report-and-the-trans-rights-debate
And the amendments noted at the bottom of the piece

I wonder if David Bell pushed for a right to respond?
