After a two year battle a Self ID bill in the Dutch Parliament has been thrown out. Congrats to all the heroes fighting this battle.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 24/04/2024 10:12

They've looked at the evidence haven't they? Good.

EasternStandard · 24/04/2024 10:25

Maybe the post 2023 election make up has helped

KohlaParasaurus · 24/04/2024 10:31

Good work!

HandShoe · 24/04/2024 10:48

Excellent news!

As I commented on the other tread about this, The Netherlands has a caretaker government who can’t deal with controversial matters. It’s not quite a win just yet. Hopefully once a new coalition is reached it will be.

Slothtoes · 24/04/2024 10:59

Well done them. I mean it should go without saying that self ID is a fucking terrible idea and that only those wearing the very strongest of misogyny specs would not be able to clock that.. but anyway.

In 2024 I imagine after each consecutive national defeat the TRAs try to organise harder to put more guilt and pressure on countries that are still considering self ID. Well done the Dutch to resist it in this climate.

Slothtoes · 24/04/2024 11:00

Oh. just seen about the caretaker government. Hmm Fingers crossed

There was a debate of the proposed legislation well before the elections. Some MPs were really pushing ‘oh, it is just administrative’ as the facility to officially falsify your sex on documentation already existed - so self ID no significant change. However, there was debate as issues which were never raised on the previous legislation were this time brought up in the ‘tweede kamer’ (lower house and equivalent of Westminster). Amongst them, the effects on women and children, which was not discussed before. No gatekeeping, predators and sex offenders (previous and potential, I presume).

This was even before the election, and the caretaker gov’t. So, it is not just a consequence or the result of the latest election.

I don’t think there much of a (or any) debate when the original legislation to officially falsify your sex came before the tweede kamer. It was portrayed as ‘rights’. Very ‘Dentons’. As at that time most people were in the dark about the adverse consequences on other people (often the most vulnerable, and especially women and children). That radio silence, in which this anti-science ideology completely overrode the rights of others without a murmur is not quite so silent any more.

The Dutch ‘sex matters’, ‘standing for women’ equivalent are ‘Voorzij’ (for her). I think they did a good job contacting Dutch MPs, and making sure they were aware of all the issues for others in society. I think it is this false equivalence of LBG with this ideology which misleads people.

Just seen on the ‘voorzij’ website that they sent a letter to MPs on 14th April this year, and attached a link to the Cass Review in point 3..

Here it their letter below. It is very long, but I think it is interesting. Excuse google translation of Dutch.

———————————-
To the members of the House of Representatives of the States General

Date: April 14, 2024
Subject: support of NSC motion to reject bill to adjust gender indication

Dear Members of Parliament,

On Tuesday, April 16, the vote on an important motion of rejection, submitted by the New Social Contract faction, is on your agenda. This motion relates to bill numbered 35825, entitled “Amendment to Book 1 of the Civil Code regarding changing the conditions for changing the gender indication in the birth certificate”.
We urgently appeal to you to support this motion. Our organization is politically neutral. Our primary concern is to protect the rights of women and children. This bill poses a direct threat to these rights. Below we set out the key points of our concerns.

  1. Self-identification of gender does not only concern people who call themselves transgender, it concerns all citizens. It is based on a belief that there is an innate 'gender identity' that can be legally codified and protected. We see this as a belief that cannot be imposed on others and should not be given legal status in a secular society. The only basis for legal status is biological sex. Furthermore, there are countless different definitions of “gender identity” and it is believed to be fluid. Using such a vague concept in place of the physical reality of gender is legally unworkable.
  1. By making self-identification of gender possible without any barriers, every man, for whatever reason, can declare himself a woman. This allows a man who identifies as a woman — even if his intentions are not pure — to demand access to spaces specifically designed to protect women. This includes shelters, prisons, changing rooms, toilets, but also women's sports and meetings for lesbian women. Women no longer have a legal basis to deny men access to these places. They even lose the legal basis to define their own identity. Men are taking over the definitions of what it means to be a lesbian, a mother or a girl.
  1. In addition to the possibility of self-identification of gender, this change in the law also concerns the removal of the age limit. This could lead to an even greater demand for gender clinics. The recently published Cass Review in the United Kingdom shows that transgender care for young people is based on a very shaky scientific foundation and that a completely different approach (and also different language) is needed. Self-identification of gender is not about this transgender care, but it could have this undesirable side effect, especially for vulnerable children and young people.

Below we add three more links to articles about the danger of the Transgender Act and self-identification of gender for biological girls, women's sports and women's prisons.

Article 'Transgender law is risky for younger girls' in Brabants Dagblad 8nov2022.pdf (voorzij.nl)Article 'Keeping women's sports for women' published in the Telegraaf! – VoorzijArticle 'Do trans women belong in a women's prison?' in Bonjo 1feb2024.pdf (bonjo.nl)

We wish you much wisdom and count on your vote for the rights, safety, privacy and dignity of all girls and women in the Netherlands.

Yours sincerely,

Renske Verheul
