Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

The Atlantic: “the more menopause and gender care are considered together in medical settings, the better the outcomes will be for everyone involved.“

Oh my. Basic argument is that lessons can be learned from trans medicine to improve menopause care. But. There are also bits like this:

Bowers, who is herself transgender, told me she got comfortable talking about sexuality in a clinical setting only after moving into trans care. If she were to return to gynecology today, she said, she would add some frank questions to her conversations with midlife patients who share that they’re having sexual issues: “Tell me about your sexuality. Tell me, are you happy with that? How long does it take you to orgasm? Do you masturbate? What do you use?”

They could benefit from a diversity of hormones, empathy about their experience, and a frank approach to sexuality—all hallmarks of trans health care.

Paywall?

On just your OP though, eew.

I had the unfortunate luck as a teenager to be under the care of a GP who was later charged with indecently assaulting his female patients and reading this brought that feeling of creep right back.

I would be telling Bowers to mind their own fucking beeswax if they asked me those questions

It let me read the whole thing for some reason (I don't have a subscription!) Here's the archived version: Women in Menopause Are Getting Short Shrift

Can't read the article but surely the journalist can see that all this shows is that Bowers wants to get his rocks off grilling middle aged women about their sex lives?

nutmeg7 · 19/04/2024 21:57

Yuk. That’s someone with no idea about dealing with actual women. Eeeesh. I am creeped out now.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 20/04/2024 00:50

Gross. I don't like the sexualised photo either, human sexuality is important of course but why do they always have to reduce us to that.

I bet.

the agency has never green-lit a testosterone treatment for women, largely because of scant research

Just wanted to draw attention to this bit.

I can't find my face in palm emoji cause that's the best I can come up with in response.

“Treatment for” being repurposed to mean “sale to”

JellySaurus · 20/04/2024 09:03

I think that the crux of the article is that the effects of menopause on women should be studied and treated more holistically. More open-mindedly, especially with regard to testosterone not being just a 'male' hormone. But it does this in a prurient, women-erasing word-salad.

In menopause, women often start to lose their sense of self. It is only acceptable for menopausal women to take HRT for physiological reasons. Women who want to take it for reasons relating to how they think about themselves are accused of vanity or excessive interest in sex. And yet the only way for menopausal women to access a trial of testosterone therapy is for them to frame their issues as not being available for PIV sex.

Bowers eh?

Fucking creep.
