Can a viper help me out. I'm looking for reliable stats for domestic violence on women and girls in the UK.

Thanks.

MN has been a nest of vipers forever (maybe 2010 or earlier?). I can't recall which politician or journalist labelled MN that after having a more rigorous questioning than they'd anticipated for the webchat (they'd expected to be asked about favourite biscuits etc.).

I would like the jacket though, or a discreet accessory.

Thanks so much. And yes, we're all vipers here. 😆

I was wondering if the ONS stats would be accurate in light of their recent inability to define women as a sex class...?

Yeh but…am I allowed to join in here if I don’t identify as a viper?

Has anyone got the up-to-date figures for D V in Scotland and Northern Ireland? I know NI is very bad.

Radio Ulster's Assume Nothing programme recently did a series called Eight Steps to Stop a Murder. It was really interesting and desperately sad about the DV situation in Northern Ireland.

Each episode focussed on a DV murder in Ulster with input from Jane Monckton Smith.

The ONS figures come from the Crime Survey for England and Wales which is self-reported, so is reliant on victims being truthful about their sex, and indeed truthful as to all the details of the offences they are reporting in the survey. So yes, possibly there are some transwomen who are reporting themselves as female victims, and there will also be transmen reporting themselves as males. And no doubt there are bored people who are just making stuff up. But I can't imagine the numbers are anywhere near enough to affect the overall numbers, which are rounded to the nearest thousand in any case.

Okay, it's the Daily Fail, but I read Bel Mooney's 'agony aunt' column on Saturday. I was skeptical to see a statistic on domestic abuse as "one in three domestic abuse victims are male".

Those are the stats straight from the National Crime Survey. While victims of partner abuse are overwhelmingly likely to be female, the story is very different in child abuse and elder abuse which is much more equal-opportunities, accounting for the surprisingly large number of male victims.

BetteDavisChin · 15/04/2024 15:53

@Soigneur thank you.

Bel Mooney quoted this statistic in a reply to an adult male reader, who was the victim of domestic abuse by his female partner, so it's possibly misleading to use it in that context.

It's only an agony aunt column, but anyone reading it would have assumed the statistic referred to partner abuse.

NumberTheory · 15/04/2024 16:02

Just to point out crime survey only covers victims from age 16 up, so not much good for stats girls.

Soigneur · 15/04/2024 17:47

@NumberTheory ah, good point, looking at the domestic abuse questions, every question is prefixed with "Since you were 16 has..."

I do know a fair number of men who were still getting knocked about by their DF (where D stands for drunk) in their late teens, and of course elder abuse is far more common than we like to think.

And there are plenty of questions along the lines of:
"Since you were 16 has a partner or ex-partner ever done any of the things listed below?By partner we mean a boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife or civil partner.

  • Prevented you from having your fair share of the household money
  • Stopped you from seeing friends and relatives
  • Repeatedly belittled you to the extent that you felt worthless
" Which I suspect many men, rightly or wrongly, will answer yes to. There is an equivalent question for family members rather than partners too.

Okay, it's the Daily Fail, but I read Bel Mooney's 'agony aunt' column on Saturday. I was skeptical to see a statistic on domestic abuse as "one in three domestic abuse victims are male".

Imagine a scenario where a couple have a girl and a boy, and the male in the couple is abusive to the female, including around the children so they witness violence, maybe is abusive to the children as well. Then you have 3 victims of abuse - 2 female (mother and daughter) and one male. So 33% of victims in that scenario are male.

That doesn't take away from the fact that there are male victims of female abuse, and that women can be abusive to children, the elderly etc. But the 30% statistic doesn't tell you who is committing the violence, it only tells us that men can be victims and need support like women. And in theory (not reality) you could have 0% of female on male violence and still have 30% of victims be male.
