Apologies if this has been posted, but couldn't see it.

Piss poor study seeking to show transwomen are apparently disadvantaged against women in sport. The International Olympic Committee again. Self selected volunteers. They have no shame.

IOC accused of new low by funding study that claims trans women are at a disadvantage

Critics claim the study compared unfit transgender women with athletic cisgender rivals, in order to prove a point

Ah, my favourite type of science:

Here are the answers we want. Now go and do some research that ‘proves’ it.

Archive copy of article: am just making my tea so no time to read/comment; priority = ensuring more FWRers can read read it 😊

Ofcourseshecan · 12/04/2024 19:48

Thanks, Nitro. Some interesting quotes from Dr Ross Tucker:
Dr Tucker explained that the pool of transgender women displayed V02max (the maximum level of oxygen a body can use during exercise) put them in a “mid-range of untrained or moderately trained adults”, whereas the group of females were in “a significantly higher category of training status”.
“One of those groups would be described as overweight, and the other athletic,” Dr Tucker added. “The transgender women have a body fat percentage of 31.6 per cent, the females 26.6 per cent.
“These demographic characteristics should already make us pause – these groups may not be comparable for reasons that really matter. …
*“I would not be comparing these groups with any expectation that the comparison is like for like. The females are fit and well trained, and the transgender women are well below the same standard. Their physiological capacity suggests untrained.”

borntobequiet · 12/04/2024 20:40

So the comparison was between a bunch of unfit, overweight men with no incentive to make an effort, and a group of fit, competitive, athletic women? Blimey.

ArabellaScott · 12/04/2024 20:45

So what they're saying is that a really unfit, fat bloke may get beaten by a fit woman?

Astonishing.

Given Cass's exposure of the inadequate, unethical and flawed research into drugs used to stop puberty in children, it seems the IOC is simply mirroring the same inadequate standards for sport. It's a feature, not a bug.

KohlaParasaurus · 12/04/2024 20:53

Even if the study had been rigorous about selection of subjects, sample size and methodology and hadn't been designed to reach a specific conclusion that for some reason suits the IOC's agenda, measurements of performance are irrelevant. Transwomen don't belong in women's sports because they're male and women's sports are not for them.

Cauliflowery · 12/04/2024 21:02

It's kind of hilarious in it's shamelessness. Or would be if actual women's careers weren't being destroyed and safety being compromised.

Do because it is really very funny! Though shocking, because we all know that this deeply flawed survey will be waved in triumph as a fait accompli for all time.

Apparently all the contributors were self selected. Hmm, suspicious that.

The women in the survey were on the whole fit and active with significantly lower body fat than the transwomen, who were not particularly fit and active. No one in the survey was a national or international athlete. So no comparison of like for like, no record of previous achievements.

The participants were not observed taking some of the tests , but self tested and recorded their own results, (!) which begs the question if you were a transwoman taking part in a survey to show how being a transwoman meant you were disadvantaged in sport compared to women ( yes it really has come down to this) would you be trying your very best to achieve your highest score in tests designed to test your body strength endurance etc?

I think they are saying that, but to save the menz shame and embarrassment they have also given them the get out clause “ well, I wasn’t really trying my hardest”

Helleofabore · 12/04/2024 21:23

Yes, this is Blair Hamilton the male goalie on a female team's study.Even the authors say that it is not proof but it is only supposed to highlight that there might be an issue 'banning' all males suppressing testosterone.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 12/04/2024 21:32

Bet they're still stronger, though. Even if they're a bit pudgy.

NitroNine · 12/04/2024 22:01

Ye gods & little fishes…

Astonishing how all the “Cass is flawed!” people haven’t been pointing out the gaping fecking holes in this. I wonder why that is when they are so very concerned with scientific rigour 🤔 I mean, they have demonstrated they have no idea what that means, so maybe that has something to do with it 🤷‍♀️

Runor · 12/04/2024 22:32

The authors of a study demonstrating this level of academic incompetence should not be allowed to stay in academic posts

EsmaCannonball · 12/04/2024 22:44

Retired chain-smoker Chelsey-Rae Kitkins (formerly known as Gordon Frotter), who last sprinted in 1987, when he thought an ice-cream van was about to pull away, couldn't beat Dina Asher-Smith in a race, and therefore trans women have no advantage over women in sport.

I haven't read it but that's going to be about it, isn't it?

^^ The study

This is one of the limitations.

Athletes from various sporting disciplines and performance levels were included, and the athlete training intensity was self-reported. Therefore, the results may suffer from selection and recall bias.

In other words, we only have their word for how often they were training.

And they don't mention the biggy - some of the study participants are invested in a particular outcome and may alter their behaviour in the study, accordingly.

Bloody hell they’re just trolling at this point aren’t they? How much must they hate women? It’s so completely disrespectful.

sourdoughismyreligion · 12/04/2024 23:00

Ross Tucker is always good for analysis.

https://twitter.com/Scienceofsport/status/1778507508769862096

If you're not on twitter.
He points out that the only qualification was to a) take part in competitive sport and b) train at least three times a week (self-reported). It doesn't compare 'matched percentiles'. I'm assuming that means athletes who are at the same level, for example, elite athletes only.

All this study has done is demonstrate something we already know, that there is a big overlap between male and female athletic performance, and that there are women who can out perform men.

Hoardasurass · 13/04/2024 10:25

Am I the only one who is worried about the statement that transwomen have the same bone density as women after hormone suppression, they are men and should retain male bone density, it having reduced to female density would mean that every single transwomen in the study has osteoporosis or severe osteopinia (sp).
Surely, the IOC should be looking into their rules as they are harming these male athletes, the only safe option is to say that they compete in the male sex category and don't have to suppress their team testosterone .

PriOn1 · 13/04/2024 12:03

For fuck’s sake!

Men shouldn’t ever have been put in the women’s category anyway, but this is ludicrous.

It’s never going to be possible to create a fair study as any man posing as a woman has a vested interest in deliberately underperforming in order to cheat his way to where he wants to be.

We saw that as William Thomas modified his kicking technique when swimming so he didn’t get too far ahead.

So sick of this utter bullshit from men’s rights activists.

There you have the "why" of this whole charade:

"there might be an issue 'banning' all males suppressing testosterone"

These pretend females want to be able to not even have to take any hormones before claiming they have magically turned into females.

Next level in the game of "lunatics spilling out of the asylum" - aided and abetted by supposedly sane people.

DustyAmuseAlien · 27/10/2024 13:16

I don't see the point of a category of sport that is open to highly trained and very fit women at the peak of their physical performance and mediocre men.

Rose asked for another pack of crisps and said, with tears in her eyes 'it has been my dearest wish to compete in the women's boxing, I've worked really hard at being myself. Those terfs are very cruel, so thank goodness for the IOC"
