Rachel Johnson acknowledges that it is OK to know that TWAM in her own terfy circles, but the Scottish hates laws and JKRs lead means she is saying it out loud. She is not the only one, with the important free speech angle acting as an added incentive.

There is an article in the Mail today about how many more resources the Scottish police are gong to need to deal with hate crime complaints. RJ (RaJo like BoJo?) helpfully provides a link so she too can be reported.

Rachel Johnson: When it comes to trans issues, JK Rowling is the heir to Orwell

We turn to a toxic subject I haven’t been brave enough to tackle in all my years as a columnist, and I’ll briefly explain why.

Excellent.

Crankywiddershins · 06/04/2024 09:02

That link just took me to a random "answer this irrelevant question before reading" so I'll need a better link, because I don't do that shite.

RethinkingLife · 06/04/2024 09:11

Decent piece. I sigh at people with status, power, and influence who might have helped prevent matters from getting to this point but JKR has done this for everyone who accepts the reality of sex matters.

The golden bridge is shining and it's time for it to attract many people across.

MeMyselfAndMyEye · 06/04/2024 09:12

JK Rowling has started her own "I am Sparticus" moment.

I remember Rachel from the Big Brother interviews about Willoughby. I guess the more that add to the momentum helps.

borntobequiet · 06/04/2024 09:23

Good article.

RoyalCorgi · 06/04/2024 10:02

I wonder if Johnson was forced to use the pronoun "she" for Willoughby, or whether she chose to do so?

A few years ago, when the gender recognition act consultation was just getting on, Johnson appeared on the Daily Politics with Peter Tatchell and a couple of others whose names I can't remember. They were either very pro-TRA (Tatchell and the other guy) or hesitantly saying it was all quite complicated and difficult, wasn't it. People were too timid to say what they really thought.

I'm so glad that times have changed. Once you are allowed to say out loud that Willoughby and co are male, then it's game over.

JKR's views are solidly mainstream, but people are bullied into silence through fear of being labelled Not Kind and of the bitchy consequences. They feel isolated in their views, unaware just how many people actually are on the side of rationality, honesty, freedom of speech, safeguarding and compassion.

JKR speaking out, and, above all, her stating so strongly that she will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with any woman who is targeted for speaking out in the same way, gives courage to uncertain and fearful women.

JKR is a true example of Millicent Fawcett's call:

A great article - she's a very entertaining writer. I liked this quote about JK Rowling in particular: "She has single-handedly ushered in a new age of enlightenment in which I don’t have to pretend to my children’s friends that I think a woman can have a penis any more."

heathspeedwell · 06/04/2024 10:18

This is also worth highlighting for anyone who doesn't want to click on the link:

Why have I suddenly acquired such ovaries of tungsten? Three reasons.
First, because my “lived experience” of Willoughby was that she said things that she dearly wishes were true when they were not, which I contend is a central tenet of trans ideology.

Second, because the Scottish Hate Crime Act came in this week, which means north of the border you can be accused of stirring up hatred even in your own home because of race, religion, age, orientation and transgender identity, but not on the basis of sex: ergo a man who says he is a woman has more protection in law than a natural-born woman.
As you will know, on April Fool’s Day, JK Rowling killed this inept and McCarthyite law dead on arrival in a surgical strike with a series of lethal tweets in the course of which she called a bunch of trans women men.
“Scottish lawmakers seem to have placed higher value on the feelings of men performing their idea of femaleness, however misogynistically or opportunistically, than on the freedoms and rights of actual women and girls,” she explained, and her truth went around the world before the accepted lie had put its kinky boots on.

Third, because Willoughby then accused the Harry Potter author of “grotesque” transphobia and doubled down on a previous post saying “I’m more of a woman than JK Rowling will ever be.” At this point I might remind readers Willoughby has fathered children, and the Oxford English definition of a male is “the sex that can beget but not bear offspring”.

JK Rowling warns Scotland’s new hate crime law is ‘wide open to abuse’

But First Minister Humza Yousaf insisted that the new legislation would help tackle a ‘rising tide’ of hate

guinnessguzzler · 06/04/2024 10:25

Fab piece, thanks for sharing!

Needmoresleep · 06/04/2024 10:36

I assume the other reason why RJ delayed speaking up was that newspapers like the Evening Standard who aim to have a broad, and relatively young readership, are only just starting to publish articles that question gender identity. It's good that she has acknowledged she was slow in coming forward and that JKR's leadership has been important.

A good piece. And the most interesting bit is the admission that she's been, not uninterested, but scared.

I wonder how many other writers and personalities are taking a deep breath and putting their big girl/boy pants on?

And I hope Jon Ronson, Louis Theroux and all the other unquestioning 'questioners' end up looking like the craven twatbadgers they are

GeorgeOrwellsTurningGrave · 06/04/2024 11:49

Nothing useful to add but "craven twatbadgers" 🤣🤣🤣 Or is it "craven twat badger"? I don't want to get cancelled @teawamutu

GeorgeOrwellsTurningGrave · 06/04/2024 11:50

TBAB etc

teawamutu · 06/04/2024 12:26

A good question, George. I think it's definitely a compound noun. TwBANB.

BoreOfWhabylon · 06/04/2024 12:38

Great article. I remember watching Big Brother at the time and RJ was clearly biting her lip to be polite (as were most of them, to be fair)
She has a show on Sunday evenings from 7-10 pm. I hope she'll talk about this. I'll try to listen and call in with support if she does.
Willoughby and the TRAs will have her in their sights now, of course.

They've always looked like craven twatbadgers to me.

It's always good to see another high-profile commentator nail their colours to the mast on the side of biology, common sense and free speech. Biology is real. Sex is binary. You cannot change sex. Men cannot become women and India Willoughby will always be a man. But will MN now delete this post? Because I've had posts deleted in the past for stating biological fact. Now that JK Rowling has spoken are we all finally allowed to use our free speech to state that biology is real and immutable?

Really good to see her speaking out now - and also positive that it’s in The Evening Standard.

Well done RJ. 👏🏻 Time for more people to start speaking up.
