Really important to recognise the safeguarding implications of treating children like little adults. Let's hope the other therapy bodies follow suit.

Who is ukcp?

menohnopausal · 05/04/2024 15:27

Interesting! Wonder if BACP will have a rethink.

TheCoffeeNebula · 05/04/2024 15:30

Promising. Something that makes me wonder about what's going on behind the scenes there is that it seems to have maybe been written and published in a bit of a rush. Something about the phrasing and structure, and an error or two that would usually get picked up by proofreading in a public statement released by an organisation like this. Obviously it doesn't matter in itself, but it's a feeling I don't often get from this kind of considered official pronouncement — they're usually perfected and clearly carefully edited down to the word.

Who is ukcp?

UK Council for Psychotherapy, Warrior.

Off to have read all about it. Cheers, George.

parietal · 05/04/2024 15:30

UKCP = UK council for psychotherapy.

they say they pulled out because the MoU on conversion therapy was originally written for adults and was then applied to children without considering the different needs of children.

and when they consulted with their members with expertise in child therapy, the presumably heard about a whole lot of more complex issues & safeguarding that needs to be done.

Snowypeaks · 05/04/2024 15:32

Being opposed to applying the MoU to children is a good reason to withdraw, but they don't address the central problems which are that affirmation "therapy" can be gay conversion therapy and talking therapy can be outlawed as trans conversion therapy. But it's a start.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 05/04/2024 15:33

Another small step in reintroducing the concept of safeguarding children to so many captured organisations.

DameMaud · 05/04/2024 15:34

This is very good news. Thank you for posting OP

Who is ukcp?

It will make them outliers so the pressure will be on to evidence their stance. (Sorry was responding to another post - but I see your question is already answered) 😊

Totally agree @Snowypeaks but it's a step in the right direction. And I'll take that.

ADoggyDogWorld · 05/04/2024 15:39

OK so the MoU changed the parameters to include children in 2019, but did not consult on this change, merely imposed it.

UK Council for Psychotherapy have been trying to engage with Coalition Against Conversion since then, to discuss a number of important issues and concerns including definition of terms. This has been ultimately unsuccessful.

With concerns remaining unaddressed the decision was made with regret that UKCP needs to withdraw its signature from the Memorandum of Understanding on Conversion Therapy in the UK v2 (MoU) and its membership of the Coalition Against Conversion Therapy. With immediate effect, no less.

Please, please let BACP be next!

I second this.

It's also worth noting that there's crossover between the architects of the MoU and recently disgraced activist group WPATH

This was their previous statement on gender critical views for 2023. It's a process of realisation for them it seems?

Sadly I don’t think they will. They’re obsesses with “queering” everything.

Also the UKCP statement refers to having discussions with other professional organisations and BACP was notably not included.

I really hope I’m wrong though!

Crankywiddershins · 05/04/2024 15:53

I wonder if this has anything to do with the imminent arrival of the final Cass review?

This is my take on it as well. It feels like a gradual process of realisation, but I also wonder if they’re doing a massive reverse ferret, but trying not to scare all the captured therapists by drip feeding these announcements out carefully.

Snowypeaks · 05/04/2024 15:54

Good guide on gender-critical views. I knew it would be good because it correctly and neutrally summarised what GC belief is.

That makes good sense Orangedoll

I too, wonder about the timing and Cass. Also the WPATH files * *

I noticed that too. Let them fall.

This Easter it has felt as if the people are starting to circle their wagons in anticipation of the Cass report (which I thought was to be released this month)?

It also coincides with the Mayo clinic study that, surprise surprise, has observed that puberty blockers seem to damage pre-pubescent sperm in an irreversible way.
