Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

When Gender Transition/Affirmation becomes Transphobic

There has been a lot of talk recently about Disney and shareholder revolts etc.

One issue that came up for a vote at Disney (and voted against) was the desire for Disney to cover the cost of medical treatment required to detransition. Seeing that it's unfair companies are encouraged to pay for gender transition (away from their natal sex), but not the other way around.

The media are covering this as "anti-trans", portraying those who detransition as transphobic campaigners. How strange that gender transition/affirmation (whatever you want to call it) when it is for someone who wants their body to match their gender identity is considered bigoted because it is for detransitioning.

Whilst I don't believe in "gender identity" I find it rather depressing how the media is so dismissive of detransitioners and quite happy to besmirch them.

Are people not allowed to affirm their natal sex?

Disney Shareholders Reject Anti-Trans Policy In High-Stakes Annual Meeting

It's hard to see what would be needed to pay for tbh.

If there are significant mental health issues post transition then I would guess that would be covered if they affect life functioning, whatever the cause.

Complications of transition surgery would be covered as much as any other follow up presumably.

Is there any evidence that restorative hormones wouldn't be covered? If American doctors can prescribe testosterone for transmen on the basis that they are 'men with low testosterone', I'm sure they can come up with some formula to cover women needing female hormones.

The article is weak but I'd agree that this particular effort was a political move. Its not wrong to do that but companies aren't obliged to roll over.

Sadly the pharmaceutical and medical industries will be pushing for insurance to fund this. In both transitioning and de-transitioning there is profit, this is especially the case in the US.

De-transitioners are genuinely far more vulnerable than TRAs and trans people. They made choices which may have long term health implications, potentially requiring ongoing medical treatment and that can leave them in legal limbo. In addition their staunch supporters whilst they were transitioning now consider them traitors.

Well considering that the companies have funded for people to get into this mess and cause the medical issues, they should be expected to cover the costs of detransition.

Perhaps if companies knew they were liable for the costs to reverse such treatment they would decide not to offer transition in the first place.

This is rather like the NHS having to pay to correct people's dodgy plastic surgery from Turkey.
