I am very concerned at the continuing erosion of women's rights, we are victim to an ideology that is happy to twist the truth and bully and belittle people. Here in Basingstoke, we have a very active Women's Equality Party that infuriatingly pushes that very same agenda and has been openly critical of those of a progressive nature who hold a Gender Critical position. Their candidate was asked to sign the Green Party's Declaration for Women's Sex Based Rights and they were openly hostile to the requester.

They are holding a hustings event on the 6th April and it would be amazing if we could push their candidate on their commitment to real equality for women and ensuring that women are not erased from society in pursuit of an ideological stance. Unfortunately sensible voices are drowned out by those who shout the loudest.

Sign up page is on eventbrite and questions can be emailed in.

I don't live anywhere near but have my best wishes. Honestly, the WEP such a disappointment, they had one job!

lonelywater · 02/04/2024 23:38

good luck. you will need it. surely by now the only people left in the Women's Exculpatory Party will be swivel eyed loons?

EBearhug · 03/04/2024 00:03

About the only thing I have in my calendar for April already is that date!

KellieJaysLapdog · 03/04/2024 00:22

Is the WEP main funder still the techie bloke with a trans child?

I didn't even know that, that explains their and her agenda. Really disparaging when it was raised with her.

If anyone is unable to make it, does anyone have some good questions that I can ask to draw her out on that? Or questions can be sent into their hustings email address, hwbhustings 'at' gmail.com

I don't think you have to register to attend to ask a question. Just put the subject as 'Hustings question'.

How is equality for women eroded by including trans women?

it doesn’t affect equal pay, ending violence against women, equal parental rights etc

i don’t see how any of their objectives can’t be met for all women?

there is a strong correlation between autism and gender identity issues so you’ve got an already vulnerable individual that you’d like to marginalise (and ridicule) even further. Nobody cares about suicide amongst trans individuals. It’s all about women’s safe spaces. How about we fight for EVERWHERE to be safe for EVERYONE or is that to big of an ask so we’ll make a tiny minority suffer.

SwordToFlamethrower · 04/04/2024 18:34

Because the needs of the many (biological women/girls) outweighs the needs of the few (narcissistic males who are obsessed with invading women's spaces)

Men can’t actually turn into women.

HTH.

I am near Basingstoke, but not in the Basingstoke constituency - I have two issues with WEP - firstly them not recogonising what a woman is and in Basingstoke particularly it looks like Labour actually have a shot at electing their candidate this election. I was a member of Greens when they were trying to get a job share candidate in Basingstoke, but when they went all weird.

99victoria · 04/04/2024 21:43

I used to be a member of WEP. In fact, I was a regional Chair and I attended their conference about 4 years ago.
I gave up my membership shortly after Sophie Walker resigned. At the time they said she 'moved on' and 'wanted to spend more time with her family', but the self ID issue was already raising it's head and the party's stance on inclusion of and support for Transwomen was something I just couldn't get on board with.
It's very sad - I felt they could have been a great force for good if they'd really been keen to promote the interests of women

Because women are not men. In a million different ways. Women have never been men. The more we present the superficial trappings of social gender norms as sex based the worse it will be for women in the long run.

wiffin · 04/04/2024 23:11

'it doesn’t affect equal pay, ending violence against women, equal parental rights etc'

How do you know it doesn't? A transwoman won't be discriminated against in the same way as they won't be taking maternity leave. They have been socialised as a male. And a transwoman at the top of the heap (cough Pip cough) can be held up as an example of equality. No more effort required.

Ending vawg. Have you seen the endless examples? At the extreme end when transwomen are imprisoned with women?

Equal parental rights. See transwidows and surrogacy.

Plus what others have said.

I don't disagree that transpeople can be extremely vulnerable. But they need support as transpeople. Not as something they are not.

Feminism: the only equal rights movement in history which is expected to prioritise the oppressors in their campaigning.

If you can't grasp that humans don't change sex, that women are oppressed on the basis of sex, and that they're entitled to say so, start with the Break It Down For Me thread on this board.

If you're (as is usually the case) strategically refusing to grasp it - the faux-naif thing doesn't work here.

@NimbleScroller I created this thread a couple of years ago which collates all the MN webchats at the time the WEP was founded, and discussion about Jon Skeet etc. Someone on Twitter said he's something to do with "UN Women" as well - does anyone know anything about that or can verify?

Forcing women to share private spaces with transwomen very much increases the risk of violence against women. I'm sure that someone can link a compilation thread of incidents which have happened, if you'd like to (ahem) educate yourself.

I personally know a number of trans individuals and not one of them has been violent towards another person. They are far more likely to experience violence than to commit it but their protection and safety is utterly irrelevant.

You understand that you are not everyone, yes?

The plural of anecdote is not data. Go and look up actual crime stats and offending rates and stop wasting everyone's time with the beee kiiiind guilt-trip crap. It's been done hundreds of times and it doesn't work any more.

You can’t consent on behalf of other women.

My dad’s lovely too but I don’t think you should have to compete against him at sports, even though he’s slower now due to the medication he takes.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/04/2024 11:15

It's not just about safety. Most women don't want to share female spaces with any men at all, however lovely. It's a question of privacy, dignity and feeling safe and comfortable.
