Mysterious drop in GIDS Waiting List…

From TwiX (name of newspaper not given):

Waiting list Sizeable drop
During the last 18 months, staff have been baffled by what appears to be a drop in the numbers on the waiting list.
After the announcement was made in 2022 that Gids would close, there were about 7,000 people on the waiting list, but the current figure being cited is 5,000 - a reduction of 2,000 patients in a period in which, clinicians said, no patients were removed from the list to be seen by staff, but more would have been added.
At the point the list was given to NHS
Arden and GEM in November 2022, there were around 300 new referrals per month, staff said, so if that continued there would now be about 10,000 on the waiting list.
Yet it stands at half of that. Some of these will be 17-year-olds who were moved to the adult waiting list, but this, staff said, would not explain all of that potentially 5,000 drop.
NHS England said only those over 17, any duplicate names or those who asked to be were taken off the list.

Truly a mystery 🤔

There’s a 2014 document here, hosted by GenderGP, funnily enough (not visible from their main site, as far as I can see)

That's absolutely brilliant, thank you so much. It's reassuring that so much of this is archived because it people will find it so helpful when the inevitable court cases come.

Ah cross post. Kellyjay's is much clearer!

I’m just sticking this down here as I’ve not come across it before - NHS Scotland leaflet on general trans stuff uploaded 2014 but dated as 2007 (on the back page of the leaflet).

(found via my postcode search method!)

All this archiving makes my little historian heart very happy…

Researchers in the Netherlands tracked more than 2,700 children from age 11 to their mid-twenties, asking them every three years of feelings about their gender.

Results showed at the start of the research, around one-in-10 children (11 percent) expressed 'gender non-contentedness' to varying degrees.

But by age 25, just one-in-25 (4 percent) said they 'often' or 'sometimes' were discontent with their gender.

The researchers concluded: 'The results of the current study might help adolescents to realize that it is normal to have some doubts about one’s identity and one’s gender identity during this age period and that this is also relatively common.'

EXCL: Most kids grow out of desire to change sex, study suggests

Researchers from The Netherlands found one-fifth of children who are unhappy with their gender grow out of the feeling by the time they become adults, according to a 15-year study.

I taught at a school for a while that decided to tackle all the trans confusion with teenagers by dispensing with gender pronouns altogether, letting teenagers wear what they wanted and being very clear that their gender identity was entirely their own business + absolutely not to interfere with their English homework.

it was interesting. It had a reputation for being very accepting / queer friendly (which it really was) so we had a greater than average number of students enrolled who initially presented with gender dysphoria. A very large proportion of them gradually moved back towards identifying with their original / birth sex.

I think the less being trans is the zeitgeist way to rebel, the less of a grip it has. Of course there will always be a small number of people who experience real dysphoria and need proper medical help. But with as little fanfare as possible.

Hooplahooping, how did it deal with toilets, sports and changing rooms? And sex ed?

Loos - Small private school - individual cubicles.

Sports - school too small to field teams externally - internally they had two categories ‘girls’ and ‘open’ - which the students figured out themselves which they competed in.

basically small community with good relationships = very few problems. You can’t codify the nuances of a successful teenage community and roll it out at a macro level. It doesn’t work like that.

I do think the universal acceptance without any space for drama was a very positive recipe for letting teenagers explore without being pigeon holed into an identity politics box.

teenagers are gonna teenage in whatever direction they sense chaos. That’s what they’re supposed to do. I don’t think either pearl clutching or blind agreement with them are the right solution - and the huge amount of both going on at the moment is extraordinarily counter productive.
