‘Pride’/LGBTQIA+ a major religious or cultural festival?

Sainsbury’s is selling a charming lift-the-flap children’s ‘Ramadan’ book on their shelf dedicated to this festival.

It is published by Penguin as part of a series titled ‘First Festivals’ under the ‘Ladybird’ name. I wondered what others they had so looked it up.

As well aa Ramadan there is also,
Easter,
Christmas,
Hannuka,
Diwali,
Lunar New Year and ………………….
Pride

Penguin writes:
Discover the celebration of the Pride with this bright, interactive lift-the-flap book!

Featuring simple text, gorgeous illustrations and satisfying lift-the-flaps, this book explores the festival of Pride and helps young children understand the importance of this special LGBTQIA+ celebration.

Lift the flaps to reveal homemade costumes, the different identity flags and see what happens during a Pride parade.

The First Festivals series invites children to explore the world's culture from the comfort of their home, encourages the development of hand-eye coordination and is recommended for children aged 2 and over.

How has Pride been elevated to the status of the major religions of Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism and Newar Buddhists, or a cultural tradition with spiritual meanings like Lunar New Year?

Cos its a religion innit

Draigosaurus · 01/04/2024 19:03

Is there a Ladybird book about the Eisteddfod?

That’s a UK cultural festival (in Wales) which it would be more appropriate for a toddler to learn about.

Especially as there’s an Urdd Eisteddfod for children and young people and an international Eisteddfod - with plenty of costumes from different countries’ folk dancing traditions at the international Eisteddfod.

I'm a Lesbian and this is ridiculous and I imagine every straight person is sick of this nonsense because I am!
All I ever wanted, was to live my life as a regular person, who happens to be same-sex attracted. That's all it is....
I wish people would find a religion, any religion, and stop this.

AlisonDonut · 01/04/2024 19:14

Lift the flap?

Are you fucking kidding me?

Karensalright · 01/04/2024 19:28

Back in the day ladybird produced Peter Jane books for schools, with very specific gendered roles, Jane baking with mum Peter helping dad fix the car….quelle suprise.

Why is this relevant?

Yeah we know, and then we said that gender stereotypes are a load of old bollocks...thus becoming gender critical (I.e. critical of gender). It wasn't us who started all this stereotyped gender identity rubbish.

This could be an example from a Verbal Reasoning task:

Mark the one that doesn’t belong in the group -

Ramadan Diwali Hanukkah

Pride(LGBTQAI+)

Easter Christmas Lunar New Year

Or is Pride/LGBTQAI+ now effectively a festival of religious significance in many people’s minds? This would explain a lot.

My friend goes to Pride and has a lot of casual sex there. Wonder how the book deals with that aspect for two year olds 😐

Heylo · 01/04/2024 21:00

I’m a lesbian and pride now has nothing to do with gay people. It’s a parade for spicy straight men to perform their fetishes in public and their handmaidens to cheer them on. I hate that gay people are associated with this nonsense.

ScrollingLeaves · 01/04/2024 22:40

Not only does Pride have no natural, logical place among the other festivals, but these lift the flap books are for very young children. Children are introduced from their earliest days to the happiness and magic of the big religious festivals. But a pre-school child is not a natural part of a Pride festival in the same way as they are an essential participant in Christmas, Ramadan, Hanukkah etc celebrations within their family and within their community.

Anything promoting the idea that they are, or should be, is wrong imo, as is the idea that Pride has any equivalence to the great, important festivals.

Have they done one for Glastonbury? Or the Fringe?

No!🤔 Perhaps they will now though so as to give the Pride one a more logical place in the series.

The Pride First Festivals book is all actually about gender identity.

It says:

Pride celebrates the
LGBTQIA+ community...

with each letter in the name representing a different identity or gender

to very little children.

La la la la la la la la la la la la la

No! No! No! There will be no lifting the flaps on what happens during a Pride parade. NO! I've seen photos of Price parades recently, and no, just no!

Penguin Ladybird First Festival series
team may be.

According to the book LGBTQIA+ letters represent ‘identities and genders’. It does not mention sexual orientation as such. It says ‘Love is Love’. It shows a large number of flags for all the Pride interests.

It establishes the idea of Pride at a young age so when they see ‘Pups’, and flags etc one day it all will seem normal. ‘Love is Love’ will be a useful mantra for erasing boundaries, though it sounds sweet and true enough in one sense. It presents it as being equal to religious/cultural festivals like Easter, Hanukkah, Christmas, Ramadan, Diwali, and Lunar New Year by including it in the series about these.

Children’s book publishing is well on board for some reason.

ScrollingLeaves · 02/04/2024 00:18

It is extraordinary that this is presented almost as an alternative religion.

I had put this on a board with a completely different subject by mistake and an observant poster there noted the picture of the white man educating the two women from minority groups.

One of the women is in Muslim dress.

Sorry to single your post out, but it sums it all up - you get that the right, the conservative view is that you're all expendable, right?!
Whether you're gay, or lesbian, or trans, you're all LGBT. They don't differentiate.
I just do not get why some will have issues with some letters but not others.
When it comes down to it they're all expendable, including women once they've weakened gillick competence/bodily autonomy. We're all entwined

Edited as bold quote but failed

ScrollingLeaves · 02/04/2024 00:25

This is the white man showing the two women the way.

The captions on these screen shot pages are:

“At Pride, you can find out all about charities that help educate and support people in the LGBTQIA+ community”

“We stand with LGBTQIA+ people”

“Pride is a festival for celebrating love, equality and hope, and for campaigning for fair treatment for everyone”

“Love is Love”

I agree. We are becoming akin to freak shows again, it's so upsetting. I don't want to be associated with overt sexual behaviour, with kink, with pushing this agenda onto the rest of society. We were so close to being treated with detached nonchalance. With being normal and ordinary and boring. With being treated like just any other human. That's all most of us want.

Pride used to mean something. Now it's an embarrassment.

GoodAfternoonGoodEveningAndGoodnight · 02/04/2024 00:39

Because of the growing hostility towards LGBT rights, regardless of whether people don't agree with a letter whether that be the B or the T whatever - I just don't get why you're all fighting against each other.
I'm not any part of LGBT but I fucking care because it kind of impacts me as a female (bodily autonomy, etc)
Women and LGBT should be sticking together imo

Oh here we go. A lovely little "ally" who "fucking cares" is here to tell us why we're all doing it wrong. And look, you're blaming "the right" to boot.

Why don't you martyr yourself to someone else's cause and stop with the faux confusion. I know people like you love all the pink and glitter of Pride and it works so well for your socials and your right-on conversations but we're not zoo animals. We're not your projects. We're not your props. We are human beings who are facing a sustained attack on our way of life.

And I won't be told by you or anyone else who I ought to centre in my own conversations about my own identity. No matter how much you "fucking care".

The right does attack LGBT issues though.
