Just heard this on R4 news - wonder if it will be covered in PM program

Lorn Slater and Patrick Harvie

Scottish Parliament staff banned from wearing rainbow lanyard

Staff are no longer allowed to wear accessories for social movements to minimise risk of "perceived bias".

Glad to hear it.

LizzieSiddal · 21/03/2024 16:26

Staff will be permitted to continue wearing a badge that shows their pronouns.

FFS, this will become the new Rainbow lanyard.

SaffronSpice · 21/03/2024 16:34

About time!

SaffronSpice · 21/03/2024 16:36

I wonder if it was the Palestinian flag lanyard that tipped it? Difficult to say that that is anything other than a political statement (yes I know rainbow ones were too but they can’t pretend a Palestinian flag is just about equality)

Emotionalsupportviper · 21/03/2024 16:38

GOOD!

Particularly as (IIRC) a poster on one thread recently reported that she was refused entry to a parliament building because she was wearing a scarf in suffragette colours (which was deemed a political statement) by a staff member wearing a rainbow lanyard (apparently not a political statement).

endofthelinefinally · 21/03/2024 16:42

Back when I was nursing you weren't allowed to wear any kind of badge or article that was of religious/ ideological or political significance. I think that should be the rule for any public service.

sashagabadon · 21/03/2024 16:43

I honestly think we should all just get back to wearing a single colour lanyard with the company logo on or staff/ visitor/ contractor whatever on. All other lanyards for own time only. It is getting ridiculous.
some of my colleagues now have multiple badges all over their lanyards . That needs to go too!

I'm sure it was until very recently @endofthelinefinally

It's just this special vulnerable, discriminated against, powerless, stunning and brave etc group that has had the exception made for them.

SaffronSpice · 21/03/2024 16:58

I see it is only staff, I presume the MSPs can still attend wrapped in whatever political statement they wish?

Same here. Of course they are all pronoun badges and various rainbow ones. I have my suffragette one that I added for IWD and never took off. It’s pretty.

My thoughts exactly. I feel really anxious when someone is wearing a pronoun badge - it makes them look like a militant trans activist who will try to crush me by whatever means possible if I don’t go along with the gender woo.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 21/03/2024 17:23

Rainbows and pronoun badges - Two cheeks of the same ar*e surely?

From another article:

The move follows concerns about visitors to the parliament being asked to remove items perceived to be political, including suffragette colours.

So it looks like they wanted to stop women wearing suffragette colours and realised that to be able to do this, they'd have to apply similar rules to staff, with carve-outs for MSPs and their staff.

SaffronSpice · 21/03/2024 18:02

I think we need some ‘pronoun badges’ instead. I can think of a selection of nouveau pronouns….

But how far can they go banning colours worn by visitors?

Yes.

”My pronouns are sex-based”

Sex/Based

Correct/Grammar

I/Me

It’s Scotland. It wasn’t unusual to see ‘no colours’ notices outside bars when I was young.

Igmum · 21/03/2024 19:35

A step forward (and frankly a surprise, I thought they'd be prising rainbow lanyards from TRAs cold dead hands)

PriOn1 · 21/03/2024 20:50

Ironic that they’ve banned the lanyards, but allowed the, far worse, pronoun badges.

Those are absolutely a performative political signal, just as pronouns in an e-mail signature are.

Sometimes I wonder whether this is ever going to end.

However, creating a furore with a good number of “my pronouns are sex based” badges should sort the problem out.

I 'm sure I saw something earlier in the month about a lady getting turned away from a debate(?) last week because of a badge she was wearing. I think this was the incident that prompted the 'request'
https://www.thenational.scot/news/23971714.tory-msp-fumes-holyrood-rules-feminist-badge-confiscated/

The badge which was worn last week was one that said 'Scottish Lesbians' and the wearer was told to remove it and put it in her bag before attending a roundtable session as it was a 'political message'. She was then checked in to the event by a member of staff wearing a rainbow lanyard.

RichardsGear · 21/03/2024 23:52

I work for the local council and guidelines explicitly say only the standard council issue lanyard should be worn, no exceptions, and no logos or slogans on clothing. They're very strict about it.
