... women are only eligible for release up to 18 days early, despite warnings that men convicted of crimes including domestic abuse are among those being released up to 60 days early.

In response to a request for comment, the government said it has never been gender-specific about which prisoners can be released.

Ian Lawrence, head of the probation union Napo, told The Independent that he understands there are three women’s prisons included in the scheme, and raised concerns over a lack of equality in the treatment of women being eligible for release only 18 days early and men up to 60.

“We’re not intrinsically opposed to it if it’s managed properly, and if it is, women should be given full and equal treatment,”

Quite apart from the unfairness, from the article it sounds as if there is - if anything - more need to move women out early.

It's infuriatingly unfair that the sentencing and release conditions for male criminals are so obviously influenced by prison logistics and not justice. It's a twisted system where male criminals are actually benefitting from being more numerous, more recidivist and more harmful.

For me it is just another example that all the hot air coming from politicians and policy makers dont ever actuallly translate into treating women equally.

At a very basic level this is sex discrimination, are men are getting better opportunities than women from the "justice" system.

As well as when you take into account actual crimes committed.

This isn't an example of bias (unusually) but rather the result of simple numbers. The male estate is at 99.35% of capacity whereas the female estate is at 97%. This translates as releasing male prisoners 60 days early and releasing female prisoners 18 days early to create the required capacity in each estate.

But they could set the figure for women to match the men's couldn't they?

For heavens sake - that is how sex discrimination happens.

Get a grip.

The whole point of equality is not saying because it is easier to focus of men, so that women lose out, isn't discrimination because it is purely about practicallities.

PPE clothing not fitting women because most is made for men isn't justified by manufactoring convenience. It is because men are presumed to be the bar by which everything is judged.

This sex discrimination.

And - is morally wrong that men convicted of violent crime are getting more lenient treatment than non violent convicted women.

Never thought that on a feminist board someone would post something so reactionry - such as perfect archetype of why discrimination against women happens every day.
