Just reflecting on how far we have come

Not resting on any laurels at this point, and we have been here before, but it does feel there are beginning to be the fundamental shifts back to a more sensible position on gender.

No child will now be prescribed puberty blockers unless and until there is a clinical trial set up. Hundreds and hundreds of confused and fucked up kids will be saved from life long medication, sterility and horrendous surgeries. This is a huge huge victory.

Women's sports are getting safer by the day.

I think there are now no TW in the female jail estate.

All the successful court cases and a new SEEN network meant that when i started my new job last year and was invited to add pronouns to my signature, i not only declined but felt v comfortable saying why (because highlighting I am female will not make my life any easier) . I got no challenge 3 people thanking me, and have noticed quite a few people have stopped using them.

You can no longer be lawfully discriminated against at work for expressing gender critical views.

I know, still a long road ahead, but this is the most hopeful i have ever been that we may get back to a more sensible and balanced place on gender.

I was involved in the Fair Play for Women Hands off My Rights campaign back in 2017 & back then people had no idea what we were talking about.

Now pretty much everyone knows.

And a bill has been written, by members of the government, being presented in the HoC, specifically raising fixing sex into the equality act as birth sex.

Even if it goes straight down this time, the fact it's being put forward at all is enormous.

I am very worried about what Labour's policy is going to be given Angela Eagle's very recent tweet.https://twitter.com/angelaeagle/status/1765795128407388651?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet I don't really understand what they mean by 'conversion therapy ' in this context as NHS England have just said that therapy is a vital part of treating GD children. I'm also worried about the Scottish Hate Crime Act although I think it's going to be such a disaster that it may well force some kind of screeching u turn.

Having said that, and as a somewhat late arrival at the party, well done everyone who has campaigned on these issues for years. You have had an impact.

LostInScience · 15/03/2024 11:26

Part of me hopes that not even the Labour party will want to die on the hill of banning conversion therapy (especially now that puberty blockers have been banned), or other controversial policies, now that the discuss is getting more open.

It all depends on your scale.

How much we've won vs. how much we've lost that would have been unthinkable in the 1990s (except among the far-sighted who were fully aware of the logical outcomes and the mess we're in today).

I don't agree that any of these are done deals.

Any of these "gains" that I see as clawbacks are fragile enough that they could be removed on the first day of an incoming government. I'm thinking of Biden's first day and his landmark removal of Title IX etc.

I've filled out 2 professional surveys this week. Both asked for my sex, not my gender.

They also asked if I identified with the sex I was registered at birth. That bit isn't quite right yet, but at least they didn't use assigned at birth.

It does feel like baby steps forward. And my Terfiness is no longer a joke amongst wider friends family.

RethinkingLife · 15/03/2024 13:34

Not straightforward to do this but a friend was filling out a survey from Imperial College (about an interesting technology idea) and abandoned it when it came to the demographics.

After all, despite Invisible Women, despite the call for sex disaggregated data (with gender as a separate issue if relevant), why not ask the general public for gender instead of sex in healthcare? It has been demonstrated to be remarkably successful in the recent census…

It's far from the lengthiest list I've seen. In my professional life, it's almost impossible to sign up for a healthcare conference (even as a speaker) without the mandated inclusion of pronouns (as in, you can't move through the form without providing an answer from the dropdown menu).

Extremely proud about how far we've come. I was #stickerwoman on Crosby Beach back when #nodebate was in full force. Not anymore, women! 💪🤍💜💚
