Catapult attacks question - "children"? Or is it really "boys"?

Today a lot of news media outlets have been covering a story about "children" or "youths" or "youngsters" deliberately killing and injuring wildlife with catapults.

Does anyone know whether this is genuinely "children" - or just "boys"?

Because let's face it, it's certainly not a line of of antisocial behaviour girls normally go in for. Theft, low level bullying, fraud...yes.

I honestly don’t believe this is anything new - it’s just being talked about because of social media. Boys massacring wildlife with air guns and catapaults and home made bows was absolutely standard when I was a child in the 70s and 80s. The only difference is that back then it was either tolerated or posItively encouraged by parents (rural area). I remember one mum proudly boast about how many hedgehogs her son had killed to my mum and being absolutely outraged.
