Scarlet Blake and the BBC (again...)

DuesToTheDirt · 11/03/2024 17:19

So some people got a quick response to their complaints to the BBC re calling Scarlet Blake a woman, basically saying the BBC uses whatever the person in question uses, blah blah, nothing to see here.

Some of us got a response a little later, saying they were looking into it, and, ta-da, I've just had an update which says... basically the same as the first lot of people got Hmm.

Scarlet Blake was tried as a woman and the pronoun ‘she’ was used throughout.

BBC reporting in this area follows the publicly available BBC News style guide. It says: “We generally use the term and pronoun preferred by the person in question, unless there are editorial reasons not to do so.” In this case, we considered it editorially appropriate to include the fact that Blake is a transgender woman and did so across our output. We accept that should have been included in the report on the News at One on 26 February.

We greatly value audience feedback - complaints are added to our overnight reports and widely circulated. This issue has also been raised directly with senior editors in News.

This is our response at Stage 1a of the BBC’s complaints process. If you’re dissatisfied with this reply, a follow-up complaint may be considered at Stage 1b. You must submit a follow-up within 20 working days through the BBC Complaints webform. If you do decide to contact us again, please include your case number, and explain why you feel your complaint has not been addressed. We will then review your complaint.

But but but, BBC. this person also identifies as a cat. Seems a bit transphobic to ignore this aspect of their identity. People are what they say they are etc

Please take it through the stages. A pain I know.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/03/2024 21:45

I got that same response today, word for word! More or less what I expected, but I don't know why it took them so long to send it out. Will consider moving onto the next stage.

crunchermuncher · 11/03/2024 22:24

It's so exhausting. Im trying to work up the energy to take it further...

ArabellaScott · 11/03/2024 22:31

So. Now we got to stage 1.b.

maltravers · 12/03/2024 00:35

The BBC news Style Guide is not exactly the Ten Commandments or the law of the land though. Why is that what you have chosen to put in your Style Guide (caving to BBC Pride I imagine) do you consider how women feel having these crimes and perversions ascribed to them (er, clearly no, who cares what women think?) and why did it take you so long to report SB as transgender (mad ideological adherence of course).

Dumbo12 · 12/03/2024 00:50

I got that response today as well, it says nothing, but in a lengthy way.

ScathingAngelAgrona · 12/03/2024 01:38

Would the BBC report this criminal as guilty if the said person identifies as innocent?

CriticalCondition · 12/03/2024 01:45

I got this response today too. They count on people not pursuing it to the next stage.
I've had enough of this shit. Their prejudice is showing and I'm not giving up.

Yes, I'm going to keep pursuing it, doggedly. It's notable that they give no links or help to guide you to how to follow up. And expressly says you can't reply to the BBC's email.

SaffronSpice · 11/03/2024 18:55

Yes because, I recall, you can only complain to OFCOM after completing the bollocks process with the BBC.

RogueFemale · 12/03/2024 02:10

This cannot go unchallenged. I know it's just one of many examples, but it's a really prime example of a murderer with a penis 'identifying' as a 'woman' and it's so so so wrong that this is reported as such in MSM.

ArabellaScott · 12/03/2024 06:56

Worth askign why they didn't report Scarlet as a cat, given that he identifies as one and was microchipped.

BeyondHumanKenneth · 12/03/2024 07:28

Also worth pointing to the recent Justin Webb finding where the complaints unit themselves described this as a contentious debate and concluded Justin Webb had erred to have a viewpoint on it.

Well their own blooming style guide explicitly endorses the opposite pro self ID viewpoint so how is that impartial?

Panicmode1 · 12/03/2024 07:45

I got the same, and wrote my Stage 1b complaint in a rage last night (attached). I wish I'd waited before sending because I think it's a bit emotional but I covered all of the points I wanted to make!

Panicmode1 · 12/03/2024 07:45

They've posted out of order..sorry!

Runnerduck34 · 12/03/2024 07:56

I also got the same reply.
The news article I read on their website didn't refer to him as as transgender.
Very misleading and inaccurate reporting.
However it wasn't just the BBC who were guilty of this.
What is stage 1 a?
Do we have to through stages a-z?!
I was going to leave it but this post has inspired me to take it further.

Childrenofthestones · 12/03/2024 08:02

Then off to a man's prison. It would be comical if it wasn't such a serious subject 🤪

nauticant · 12/03/2024 08:09

There's information about the complaints procedure, and its stages, here Runnerduck34:

https://adhduk.co.uk/complain-to-the-bbc/

In my experience there's no difference between stages 1a and 1b, except stage 1b is where they'll sometimes put the effort in to make you abandon the complaint.

Froodwithatowel · 12/03/2024 09:33

And this is largely about the process being as long, as tedious and as discouraging as possible.

catscatscurrantscurrants · 12/03/2024 10:15

Hold me coat, ladies - I'm going in for stage 1b!

maltravers · 12/03/2024 10:30

@panicmode1 I like your message. The Beeb needs to understand how strongly women feel and that they can’t just prejudge our concerns as bigotry.

Barbadossunset · 12/03/2024 10:33

We generally use the term and pronoun preferred by the person in question, unless there are editorial reasons not to do so.

What does ‘unless there are editorial reasons not to do so’ mean?

nauticant · 12/03/2024 10:36

When I complain to the BBC I refer to the Charter (Royal Charter for the continuance of the British Broadcasting Corporation), and particularly to section 6, for example see 6(1):

The Public Purposes of the BBC are as follows.
(1) To provide impartial news and information to help people understand and engage with the world around them: the BBC should provide duly accurate and impartial news, current affairs and factual programming to build people’s understanding of all parts of the United Kingdom and of the wider world.

http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust/assets/files/pdf/about/how_we_govern/2016/charter.pdf

That takes priority over any style guide.

I wish I'd looked for that Nauticant. That couldn't be clearer!
