He seems fairly unequivocal

https://archive.ph/4lLbf jump the paywall, don't get stuck halfway

There's a rehash of a few things at the end. That some sports have already done this except football and cricket. Apparently they are being called to parliament to explain themselves!

Keir Starmer backs ban on transgender athletes in female competition: ‘Common sense has to prevail’

Leader of the Opposition says he supports governing bodies’ actions to ban transgender women having previously refused to do so

Does anyone know anything about the football and cricket bods being called to parliament, as asserted in the article?

This bit

The Government told the UK’s sports governing bodies to ban trans women from women’s sport after the row over Thomas’s bid to compete at the Olympics and the revelation by Telegraph Sport that cyclist Emily Bridges was aiming to take part in the Commonwealth Games.

Since then, the likes of swimming, cycling and athletics have fallen into line but football and cricket have yet to follow suit and are to be summoned by ministers to explain why they have not done so.

Brendan O'Neill in Spiked on Labour and gender double speak, perhaps not the best fit for this thread but close enough

Tyranny in drag

It is high time we dismantled the phoney progressive rhetoric of the woke agenda.

That's a blistering (and depressingly accurate) article from Brendan.

That's a blistering (and depressingly accurate) article from Brendan.

It’s good, but it sounds over the top and theoretical. However, you only have to look at Canada and the US to see these are actual consequences of the sort of legislation trailed by A Eagle. I think it would be helpful if BON pointed this out to his readers, going forward.

Froodwithatowel · 13/03/2024 14:41

Well said, Brendan. Please keep on putting it that loudly and plainly.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 13/03/2024 14:51

I reckon Brendan has done a JKR and like so many of us now gives no fucks.
No more being kind, no more euphemisms - just the plain unvarnished reality of what's being forced on women & girls along with the rest of the unconsenting population.

SinnerBoy · 13/03/2024 14:57

He certainly knows his stuff on this, it's a shame that Spiked hasn't got a big audience.

Ha good luck 😬

Lion400 · 13/03/2024 15:30

It’s crazy really, I’ve literally never voted for anyone but Labour before. There are obv many women (and some men) like this right now.

IcakethereforeIam · 13/03/2024 15:40

I'm in the same position, only ever voted Labour. I wrote to my, Tory, MP yesterday asking her to support Truss's Bill and my vote was up for grabs. I'm not even sorry.

That article cracks the political jargon well

It says what many of us have been saying about those phrases from Labour

The lovely thing is though that historically the unsayable gets said first in these small publications, and then it filters through to the big media.

Actually first it gets said here, and then the ripples spread out. 😉

RedToothBrush · 11/03/2024 21:38

That's not going to work if sports bodies end up exposed to legal challenges because the law is a sack of shit.

Exactly!

Law needs to be clarified so they can turn round and LEGALLY exclude these entitled mediocre male athletes, without having to worry that smaller clubs and organisations will end up bankrupted trying to fight this shite.

fromorbit · 12/03/2024 08:15

Starmer is in a sense bowing to the inevitable AFTER women's resistance has made male takeover in many professional women's sports impossible though the fight in football and cricket , pool is still on. Starmer is just recognising reality after a struggle.

Obviously in grassroots sport the battle is still in the balance.

We don't trust him on this, BUT this is our chance to demand other parties make clear their position. For instance the SNP.

Starmer has at least said what he thinks. After years. What about leaders in other parties? Do women get sports or NOT?

Starmer has at least said what he thinks.

Not quite.

he has said what he thinks the majority of the electorate thinks, and that he hope will carry him on a wave of popular opinion into No 10.

Not the same thing.

😑 It’s been moved to ‘Politics’. God forgive people starting thinking about issues they might otherwise not have considered.

Oh it was moved

It really is only women’s sex based rights that gets shunted

Heaven forfend that Mums are exposed to the shit that actually impacts how they are seen in society.

This one wasn’t moved to politics. But then it wasn’t about women’s rights. 😑

If he thinks that the majority of the public think that, he's ready for a rubber room.

duc748 · 13/03/2024 23:28

I don't think it's as clear-cut as that, Sinner. He's adopted a policy of "say the minimum, and don't frighten the horses" all along, hoping to keep his own party quiet, and he might think that that has served him reasonably well so far; well ahead in the polls and so on. But with the developments in the last few days, can that position hold? I don't think so.

I’m a bit out of the loop which thing from last few days?

I agree generally on his method which is to say little as possible

IcakethereforeIam · 13/03/2024 23:45

@Lion400 at least you got it out there for a little while.

Waiting with interest to see Starmer and Labour's response to Liz Truss's bill on Friday. Whether they will support 'sex' in the EqAct meaning sex at birth, or whether they will have to explain that when they said they supported single sex spaces, they in fact meant 'personal choice' when they said 'sex'.

Yes, likewise. This will be the last of the very many final nails in Labour's coffin for me, electorally speaking... Or the point at which I can start voting for them again.

I am wondering whether it's just possible that the NHS announcement has given the bill a chance of passing.
