A Rousing call to arms against those who want to erase women - Rosie Duffield article

For over a century, International Women’s Day (IWD) has been celebrated across the globe to highlight the extraordinary achievements of ordinary women. Held annually on March 8, I used to think it was a positive day. This year, however, I just feel angry.
Although proud of the progress we’ve made, we find ourselves fighting on a new front — and in the unimaginable position of seeing hard-won rights being rolled back.

Incredibly, we’re at a point when even the word ‘woman’ is controversial. We’ve become ‘cervix-havers’, ‘uterus-owners’ and in extreme cases ‘non-men’. Politicians, meanwhile, flounder when asked: ‘What is a woman?’ As an MP as well as a mother, it makes me despair.

The reluctance to defend women and girls is due to a small but very vocal group of trans activists, determined to let men self-identify as women, under the guise of ‘gender ideology’.

What started as an attempt to ensure that a very small minority of people with ‘gender dysphoria’ (those who feel there’s a mismatch between their biological sex and their gender identity) were not discriminated against has morphed into a powerful global movement which allows men to claim to be women.

By uttering the magic words ‘I am a woman’ or ‘I identify as a woman’, suddenly men can enter female-only spaces such as refuges for the victims of rape or domestic abuse. This is without any commitment to have gender reassignment surgery or take hormones — not that that would make them women anyway.

It was inevitable that predatory men would take advantage of this. It is why we are seeing male abusers, rapists and murderers being called ‘she’ and ‘her’ in court and in many countries gaining access to women’s prisons.

I am proud to stand with a group of courageous women who are fighting back. We have taken part in this Mail photoshoot to raise awareness on the eve of International Women’s Day. Known as ‘gender criticals’ or ‘sex realists’, we believe in some — not all — circumstances, the sex of a person really matters.

The start of a quite long article in, not of course the Guardian, but the Daily Mail. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-13165611/rosie-duffield-refuse-silenced-women-uniting-campaigners.html

Of course its obvious to question the motives of the Daily Mail, and no doubt TRAs will just say that being GC is right wing, but its a good summary of what has been happening to women's rights.

Just wish it could be in all papers, or even part of a news channel interview.

MP ROSIE DUFFIELD leads women who refuse to be silenced

Great to see these wonderful women being celebrated for IWD. Flowers
And good to see one of the msm publicising them.

Good roll call of fine women.

<frivolity> If Maya doesn't own that dress, she should consider buying it. It suits her in every way. </frivolity>

Glad I'm not the only frivolous airhead here admiring the outfits!
I usually dislike it when serious women politicians do very fashionable photoshoots, like their ideas and work aren't enough, they have to 'look good' as well. But these photos hit the right note I think. Maybe I'd quibble slightly about some of the shoes....

Oh yes..also, they are all brave and admirable advocates for women😏

BeBraveLittlePenguin · 07/03/2024 11:14

Is it shallow to observe how gorgeous Maya's dress is? And Maya in it?

Mollyollydolly · 07/03/2024 11:19

I loved this article. I hadn't realised Rosie had been frozen out on political programmes too. She used to be seen regularly on programmes like 'Politics Live'.
And I don't care if it's shallow but that photo of Maya in that dress - she's drop dead gorgeous.

I found that a bit weird, as she was on Politics Live last week. I remember as she was wearing a dinosaur brooch

Lovely to know there are other equally frivolous airheads intelligent wise and relevant commentators on here 😁.

I wish I could see an event that wasn't showcasing TW as inspirational leaders. It's not been novel for a while, please can we move back to women.

You know, the ones who are being oppressed and suppressed in so many countries of the world.

The ones who are being made vulnerable to financial abuse because of the crippling costs of childcare and the cliff edges in our tax and child benefit systems.

The ones who have to remain with their abusers because they have nowhere else to go.

The ones who are routinely assaulted and exploited in their workplaces (NHS, I'm looking at you but you're not doing well, House of Commons or political parties).

Women. We have inspirational women amongst us, show them.

Floisme

Non frivolous types please look away. My guess is it's this dress.

Superb sleuthing there, Detective Floisme.

I'm not against women wearing even owning really nice clothes but suspect part of this was the DM thinking their readers would respond better if the images conveyed femininity. (sigh)

Also I suspect a DM influence was to show it about their being a "leader" inspiring others. I dont think that Rosie Duffield would talk about herself like that.

What would have been nice for IWD is the DM to reflect the reality which is that in response to the erosion of women's sex based rights a number of women have stood up and said no, enough is enough. Time to stop the trans onslaught.

On the otherhand, from the comments it seem that most readers are only too aware of the issue.

(Also just shows how out of touch the Guardian is. As a newspaper they should at least be reporting that whether they like it or not more and more women are standing up for themselves and other women's sex based rights.)

I may be wrong but I thought I detected negotiation because the colours were largely those associated with sex realism/Sex Matters.

The TRAs can go away! I'm personally very happy that the tide is turning against that nonsense..

Are they fashionable outfits? Look rather dull and pedestrian to me. But then I go for something much more flamboyant. I also am gender critical as was my recently late DH. Me and my late DH.

Thanks, @IwantToRetire . for setting up this thread - I was really pleased to see the Mail article as I hope this will help get the message out to a wider audience.

Rosie Duffield makes some excellent points and I feel horrified on her behalf that she is receiving hostility / death threats for calling out that sex is real and immutable.
