Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Just written to the Labour prospective parliamentary candidate for my area

I have mildly stepped up my activism by writing to the local Labour party candidate for my area (currently Tory but pretty much guaranteed to swing) outlining my left wing feminist alarm at what might appear in the Labour manifesto on trans inclusion (and women's subsequent exclusion) in the run up to the next election. I focused on: the Cass Report/medicalisation of gender confusion; women in sport (fair play for women report); trans women in women's spaces (local peeping tom filming in women's toilets- claimed to be a women when challenged); and the statistical recording of trans women's crime as being by women (Scarlett Blake). I'm sure many of you who are concerned about these issues are already in contact with your local candidates but if not it might be a good idea to make your feelings known before they all publish their election manifestos. I'll let you know what reply I receive!

Thanks for doing this. I am in a fairly safe Tory seat, but it might go to the Liberals. I will not and cannot vote for either of these, but I may contact the Labour candidate just to find their views before either voting labour or spoiling my ballot.

I've done the same.

My current MP is Conservative with a large majority so I have no idea if he's safe or not (I've never voted Con, btw) but he has been very responsive to my GC comments when I've raised them.

I also will let you know if I get a reply.

Well done. I'm in a constituency that Labour needs to take off the SNP if they're to have any chance of forming the next government, so it's all to play for. My Labour candidate is a young-ish man who seems open-minded but doesn't quite get the issues. We've had a couple of chats already; we talked mostly about why spaces for the most vulnerable women (prisons, hospital wards, refuges) need to actually be single-sex. I've got another meeting with him in the diary and a list of other priorities to raise.

I've written twice this week to my MSPs. I plan to write frequently.

My MP is a lost cause but maybe I should try anyway

I’ve written to mine too. He’s sympathetic to my concerns, and very much takes Dobb’s approach - so that’s not helping me as much as I’d hoped!

Well done. I need to do the same.

Thanks op. I need to do the same too although I intend contacting all the candidates. I understand focussing first on Labour as they're expected to be the next government, however a hung/centre left parliament isn't impossible so I think Lib Dem and Green candidates need attention too, as do the Conservatives as they're quite likely to be selecting a new leader before the end of the year and there's bound to be at least one TWAW supporter in the race.
