On 1 March the House of Commons to debate private members’ bill intended to ban “gender identity conversion practices”

Have just seen this posted on facebook by LGB Alliance. No time to search for more info. They say:

On 1 March the House of Commons will be debating a private members’ bill intended to ban “gender identity conversion practices”. An earlier bill was debated in the House of Lords on 9 February. Numerous peers expressed their deep concern about the drive to ban “gender identity conversion practices”. Some demanded to know: “How can something be banned if it cannot be defined?” Others highlighted the serious assault any such ban would represent on free speech.

Despite protestations to the contrary, peers noted that it could lead to serious unintended consequences, including criminal prosecution, for parents, teachers and others seeking to help a child explore why they are convinced they are the opposite sex, or no sex at all. As Lord Forsyth said of what he described as a “dangerous piece of legislation”: “The world has gone mad”.

This draft legislation is a matter of profound concern to LGB Alliance, since the evidence shows that the majority of teenagers seeking what is deceptively called “gender affirming care” are LGB – and especially lesbians. These bills represent a danger to LGB teenagers.

Thanks @IwantToRetire, I'll be doing my best to watch. (Good job I won't have to be all dressed and ready for the day, I'll be in my PJs most likely).

I wonder how it'll differ from the Lords' debate, as the members of the HoL don't have to get re-elected like the HoC do. I'd expect far more pandering to the Trans mob this time round.

This is the Hansard explanation of what happens during a second (and subsequent) reading of a private member's bill:

Gender transition is absolute lifelong hell for many people. Not giving people suffering gender dysphoria the chance to investigate other options is incredibly cruel.

So when it says Second Reading does that mean the first time it was discussed not enough MPs attended, or that enough did attend and this is moving the Bill a step further by having a Second Reading.

Confused ... !

Second reading is the first time it’s debated.

First reading is just a formal procedure.

Anyone else watching?

Russell Lloyd-Moyle has been much more reasonable than of late & Miriam Cates has confirmed how he's made genuine efforts to talk to anyone & everyone about this.

It seems to be mainly Miriam C and Danny Kruger raising substantial points against the bill as it is currently written.

There are a lot of emotional references to constituents traumatisd by cinversion but, obviously, no proof of anything claimed.

crumpet · 01/03/2024 11:23

I have been listening. Still no clear definition of what conversion therapy actually means. And no evidence offered by those supporting the bill (although I haven’t heard the whole debate)

simperingsychophantsbatman · 01/03/2024 11:29

And surprise surprise there's hardly anyone there...

crumpet · 01/03/2024 11:43

Not sure who that was just speaking but he made a fantastic speech

Rightsraptor · 01/03/2024 12:02

Neil Hanvey (Alba) is making very good points right now and is the first speaker to link it with queer theory.

crumpet · 01/03/2024 12:08

Thanks

PoshCoffee · 01/03/2024 12:59

Well Annaliese Dodds made it clear where Labour stands.

Violetparis · 01/03/2024 13:08

Rosie Duffields speech was excellent.

ArabellaScott · 01/03/2024 13:32

Christian Wakeford seems very sombre. I missed a vote, I think?

ArabellaScott · 01/03/2024 13:34

Miriam Cates paying tribute to Lloyd Russell Moyle and friendly, constructive conversations ... gosh, grown up politics

So it’s not going through? That’s a relief. People will still be allowed counselling and unbiased information. And maybe now these will become more readily available, without the shadow of this dreadful law hanging over therapists and counsellors.

ArabellaScott · 01/03/2024 15:00

I think it's done, yep.

StarlightLime · 01/03/2024 15:37

Thank the good Lord, phew...

MrsOvertonsWindow · 01/03/2024 16:05

That speech from Rosie D was great. She sounded so nervous - disappointing to see the behaviour of some of her labour colleagues laughing and joking as she was speaking about such a serious subject. Still when someone shows you who they are and all that...

Feeling very confused - I was watching live just after Paul Bristow spoke and at 14:30 they agreed to resume the debate on 15th March? Was there a vote an hour before that?

IwantToRetire · 01/03/2024 17:05

Wasn't able to watch and was just going to try and catch up and saw this https://www.itv.com/news/2024-03-01/bill-to-ban-conversion-therapy-blocked-in-parliament

Bit sensational to say the bill was "blocked" in headline

A bill to ban conversion therapy failed to move through Parliament on Friday, after a debate on it ran out of time.

Labour MP Ben Bradshaw accused "a small group of mainly Conservative MPs" of intentionally delaying the debate to block the bill.
