Feminism: Sex and gender discussions
BetsyBobbin · 28/02/2024 16:59

Oh this is glorious and made my day, thank you for posting 👍🏼🤣

IwantToRetire · 28/02/2024 17:01

Interesting to read but ....

Unless there was some confidentiality clause imposed on attendees, what was said at the meeting about what the organisers clearly think is a major problem to the extent that organised as event to discuss.

Were there rows of barristers singing in unison about the terror of terfs in the workplace and how they have lost trillions of £££s because their very presence stops all the be kinds from even entering their chambers.

Or is there a more serious substance review of the event.

Really interested to hear what GCC thought was the issue and how it should be "dealt" with.

lechiffre55 · 28/02/2024 17:04

A posh restaurant sends out an email advertising an event to all the prospective customers who have expressed in interest via the restaurant's website.
A group of four black people who are really looking forwards to the event and meal make a booking based on the email advert. They get a confirmation email from the restaurant.
They turn up at the restaurant on the evening and the maitre d looks them all up and down with a disapproving look on his face as they enter the restaurant.
"Can I help you?"
"Yes we have a booking for four tonight in the name Smythe-Perkins"
"Ahhh...... One moment please."
Maitre D looks through his large reservation folder.
"I'm sorry there appears to have been a mistake. Your booking was not recorded and I have no spare tables tonight."
Four people look around the resturant. It is maybe 10% full. All of the customers and staff are white. There's a few tables with reserved placeholders on them but plenty of table without.
A conversation ensues. It is clear to the guests they are being discriminated against, they can only assume based on the colour of their skin. Eventually the Maitre D reluctantly gives them a table but only because they are persistent. As they sit down the guests know they have been discriminated against, but intend to stay and eat out of principal to exercise their rights. They eat, but their night out is already spoiled. Other patrons keep looking at them, it's embarassing. Clearly they are not welcome here, a hostile environment.
They got a table, and got to eat, but they were not treated equally, they were discriminated against. I believe a majority of people would see this as blatant discrimination.

Now swap black for gender critical and the restaurant for the event.

I don't agree at all with what this person is signalling or supporting, but if I want Allison Bailey to be able to speak freely and not be harassed at work, don't I have to agree to let this chap do the same?

Good point.

Helleofabore · 28/02/2024 17:17

Love the write up.

Good point.

The point about Maya’s belief is that it was WORIADS.

Simplistic support for an attack in which people were kidnapped, tortured, raped and killed probably doesn’t reach the same heights.

GrumpyPanda · 28/02/2024 17:19

SinnerBoy · 28/02/2024 16:25

I found it heartwarming and amusing, but light on detail! I wanted some of the conversations!

Think one of the witches put a lot of the content of the presentations on Twitter, including pics of slides. Unless that was another event I am thinking of?

Does anyone else remember or even better, have bookmarks?

nauticant · 28/02/2024 17:36

If you're talking about expressing views at work, the most striking difference between Allison Bailey and Franck Magennis is the WORIADS test.

Just because women can now say that sex is immutable and that this matters in certain circumstances doesn't mean that GCC cannot express a view that what Magennis posted is repugnant.

Edit: that was to unwashedanddazed

ILikeDungs · 28/02/2024 17:45

There is an approaching army of at least four or five terrifyingly polite, reasonable women. One can understand their fear.

Amazing. Wonderful.

Maya et al showing everyone who the grown-ups are.

GrumpyPanda · 28/02/2024 17:57

Looks like i was wrong and slides were from another event. Here's the Sex Matters X thread though for some additional fun:

The speakers no doubt tear (a) out their hair and (b) up their talks. They substitute a pedestrian plod through the legislation and some of the case law.

Clearly the writer isn't aware that these events in barristers' chambers are always a plod through the legislation and case law, because, surprise surprise, that is the nature of lawyers' work. I'm sure they didn't tear anything.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/02/2024 18:12

Reading the Twitter thread I was right about the non binary barrister Oscar presenting, as I said earlier. Must have been upsetting for they/them to have a gaggle of notorious terves.

Must have been a bit like the time I went to the cross party Kinder Gentler Politics report launch at the HoP with a few redoubtable GC women where Lily Madigan was giving the keynote speech. Lily didn't hang around for a Q&A Grin and suffice it to say the irony of Lily being part of it was well and truly pointed out to the rest of the speakers and the chair.

lechiffre55 · 28/02/2024 16:39

I think it's funny, but is there a serious point here?
Isn't what was described an attempt to discriminate against a protected belief and in contravention of the Equality act by an organisation of legal professionals who have already lost a tribunal for exactly the same form of discrimination?
The GC attendees got to attend in the end, but were treated in a discriminatory manner prior. It was only because of their pushiness and the event organisers weren't able to come up with sufficient excuse despite several attempts. Non GC attendees were not treated in the same way.

While the story is funny. This is still the same no dogs, no blacks, no Irish, no gender criticals discrimination that the Equality act is meant to address. If this was a cake shop "we're out of ingredients"ing a gay couple while serving other customers, people would be up in arms.
That the GC attendees managed to attend in spite of the best efforts of the organisers to prevent them attending is discrimination against a protected belief. The way the GC attendees were treated as lesser citizens is discrimination.

This is in my opinion serious. Perhaps Garden Court Chambers need another reminder of the law as clearly their last loss has not prevented them from behaving in a discriminatroy manner towards people of a protected characteristic under the Equality act.

Some of this was also, very obviously, 'shit, we can't talk absolute crap and fantasy while we're here with people who will ask questions and pull holes in it'.

I hope they’ve let the organiser know how unsafe they felt.

I doubt Oscar Davies is too bothered. https://www.gardencourtchambers.co.uk/news/oscar-davies-shortlisted-in-two-categories-at-the-legal-500-esg-uk-awards-2024

Yes, I'm not denying he's a successful lawyer. I'm basing whether he would be upset on his own words.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/02/2024 18:40

Or perhaps you're suggesting he was hamming it all up for effect? The very idea!

And added to that Hamas are a proscribed terrorist organisation in the UK.

'Membership and expressing support for Hamas is an illegal act in the UK, punishable by up to 14 years in prison'
