“the motive for the killings is currently unclear”

“Three women were stabbed to death by a man in a brothel in Austria's capital on Friday. A suspect was arrested.”

Difficult to see how it could possibly be unclear that the motive was misogyny.

Austria: Four women and a girl killed in Vienna in 24 hours

The victims were killed in separate, unrelated incidents in the Austrian capital on Friday.

Always the same they refuse to recognise it as femicide and its really frustrating.

SomeCatFromJapan · 24/02/2024 23:31

The suspect is a 27 year old man of Afghani origin.

It is hard to consider any other motivation

Klaudia Frieben, leader of umbrella organisation the Austrian Women's Ring (OFR), wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that "this day will go down in history as Black Friday with five dead women".
According to the latest data on femicide rates in Austria, published by the Institute of Conflict Research, some 319 women were killed in the country between 2010 and 2020 - mostly by male partners or ex-partners.

For a country that averages out at 32 a year, to have 5 on one day is such an outlier. I don't know the differences (if any) between the way the UK and Austria record femicides but I am surprised at Austria's figures given that they have a population of ca. 9million vs. UK's ca. 67million.

A horror for the families of all those victims.

It is. With it being a brothel no doubt some idiot somewhere will write about it being a 'crime of passion' or other such nonsense.

Austria (where femicide is not, unsurprisingly, a discrete criminal offence, just covered by other laws) has a serious femicide problem - this 2019 report is just one to outline the multiple issues facing women there; & these statistics on VAWG are dreadful.

Austria got a telling-off from the Council of Europe’s Human Rights Commissioner in 2021 that focused on VAWG. This is the full report on her visit; & Austria’s response - takes no issue with her comments on women’s issues. It is notable just how much extra funding has been provided - but they’re working both to do & to undo, so they need a considerable budget (which an opposition party requested be provided in 2022).

The organisation mentioned in the article in the OP works across several strands, one of which is [ending] VAWG.

It’s all so utterly horrific.

Is there a country that does not have a serious femicide problem?
