Older suburban women could hold key to next election, poll finds

Suburban women over 60 who voted Conservative in 2019 could prove decisive at the general election, a think tank has said.

While several voters appear to have switched directly from the Conservatives to Labour, and others have opted for Reform UK, a larger proportion currently say they do not know how they will vote.

Of this group, which makes up around 6% of voters, most are female, older than average and likely to live in towns or suburbs,

The cost of living remains a key concern, listed as the number one issue by every voter group despite the fall in inflation over the past year, while concerns about crime and the NHS were particularly prevalent with swing voters.

From a longer article at https://uk.news.yahoo.com/older-suburban-women-could-hold-000100336.html

So this poll is saying that women may be undecided but whatever they do will make no difference?

It took some time but I tracked down the actual survey results but found it didn't clarify much, but shows the survey whilst identifying wavering Tories did not ask (or maybe there are none) if anyone was a wavering Labour voter.

Analysis by More In Common suggested the Conservative coalition was ‘fragmenting’ and the next election will be about policies, not personalities.

Yes, I'm coming across a lot of previously labour, now undecided voters. I'm one myself. I doubt our votes will make much difference though as they'll be scattered to the four winds.

It'll be the P.O.W. who get my vote, if there's a candidate standing in my area, but if not, I'm not sure what I'll do

IwantToRetire · 23/02/2024 16:38

I am starting to think that my only option is to spoil my ballot paper.

And am trying to think of something meaningful to write.

I know they dont get shared, but at least some of those at the count and hopefully some of the candidates will see it.

So might just stick with "Woman - adult human female" but suspects not everyone will understand how this fits in with voting at a GE.

I wonder if there is time to write a short essay whilst in the voting booth.

Maybe time to reuse " respect my sex if you want my x"?

I hate Trump as much as the next person but felt really uncomfortable with the way that certain groups of women were blamed for his election. I'm wondering whether this is gearing up to do similar here if there's not a Labour landslide (I doubt the Tories stand a chance now).

Runningwildish · 23/02/2024 17:22

I'm that demographic and I will definitely be voting for my prospective Tory MP who is openly GC

Runningwildish · 23/02/2024 17:24

I'm a floating voter and will vote for any candidate who supports women's rights . And by women I mean the cunty sort.

IwantToRetire · 23/02/2024 17:26

if there's not a Labour landslide

I think outside of FWR and a few other online GC spaces, no one in mainstream politics are thinking that women will undermind Labour's vote.

And without diverting this thread about local / UK politics, the threat to the Labour vote comes from Muslim communities and others on the Left including Jewish voters who will never forgive Starmer for his position re Gaza. Although for everyone's sake there is just a possibililty that in some way this situation may have eased by the time of the GE.

There are still women who do not support Labour on its failure to support women's sex based rights, but will "hold their nose" to voter Labour because their priority is to get rid of the Tories.

I think that the Tories are going for the women's vote

IwantToRetire · 23/02/2024 17:31

re. Trump not sure which women were blamed, but dont forget Trump didn't actually get the most votes. Clinton got almost 2.9 million more votes than him.

Trump won because of the electoral college. (A divise original created to help slave owners retain their political power.)

This was the year I was going to vote Labour for the first time in my life. I will now be voting Tory specifically to keep Labour out of power.

Owl55 · 06/06/2024 14:40

Well they won’t get the Waspi Womens vote will they !

IWilloBeACervix · 06/06/2024 15:10

I got excited by the title, but I’m not old enough 😢
I’m going to start writing to the candidates this weekend to see if I can get all their views. I was hoping the Labour candidate would be sensible, but a recent leaflet had them gurning at a local pride event with a bloke with a regress flag.

I’m trying to figure out how to get to a hustings.

if Labour do get in here, and it’s not guaranteed, I’ll be booking an appointment.
