An important caveat is that what is true in Finland may not be true in other countries. E.g. maybe Finnish trans people get bullied less, and maybe trans people who get bullied more are more likely to attempt suicide.

The Uk Clinicians, including Polly Carmichael have stated that the suicide factor is not higher than for other comorbities. I can find Marcus Evans paper if you like. And I might be able to find where Polly says it too.

I have a feeling I have also read an Australian paper on this too that says the same.

I don't believe that this is specific to the Finnish at all.

How would you go about adjusting for that in an analysis?

I agree that it would be immensely useful to have such data but I can't think of anywhere where it exists or where such a degree of data linkage would be permitted. (I'd be very pleased if someone knows if data like this are available.)

The authors stated this as a plausible limitation:

More recent cohorts, particularly adolescents, may differ from those in earlier decades, and stress related to gender identity itself may be lower presently because of decreasing prejudice.

I agree that it's always difficult to compare and contrast across populations and healthcare systems. This publication is a standalone assessment of Finland. Because the evidence base is scant for CYP in this fraught area, the findings are a helpful contribution.

It will be a different analysis but useful in its own right when the York analysis of the GIDS data is completed and published. (Although it's increasingly likely that this will not be within the remaining lifespan of the Cass Review.)

NB: I'm delighted to see the March conference in London is sold out for in-person attendees (there is a waiting list). The livestream is free. I'm a little confused about the separate availability of livestream tickets but I think that's to streamline donations from those of us watching the livestream and it's not compulsory.

Trans youth not at elevated risk of suicide

Can I just check I’ve understood the up thread analysis correctly in lay terms?

The data shows that if you compare patients referred to gender services to those that are not, then it appears that there are more suicides in patients referred to gender services. (0.3% v 0.1%). However, if you compare patients referred to gender services to patients with the same mental health issues but who were not referred to gender services then there is no difference in suicide rate. The implication being that it is the mental health issues at the root of the problem?

Have I got that right?

Thanks for asking, I was a bit unsure if I'd understood, statistics make my brain hurt. And thanks to @RethinkingLife for the response.

It occurred to me earlier that Cass might have been aware these studies were in the pipeline and they have delayed publication of the review so they can be included in the evidence base.
