Hi

I was wondering if anyone could recommend some modern books/people on gender criticism and modern culture?

I’m an older Mum and am becoming more aware l’m shamefully out of date especially with regard to knowing what (mis)information my children receive within education/society/ and from their peers…I’d like to be able to point them to alternative ways to consider the gender minefield. I’d also like to feel less alone with my non-fashionable views!

Thanks anyone.

Trans by Helen Joyce is a good overview.

NonnyMouse1337 · 19/02/2024 11:17

Yes I would highly recommend Trans by Helen Joyce as a good introduction into the topic and the main issues arising from gender ideology.

Boiledbeetle · 19/02/2024 15:17

I may be biased but my recommendation would have to be two books written entirely by the women of this very board! They might not be useful for conversations with your kids but they will be a quick guide to some of the crap that happened and the effects it had on women in 2023 in the name of gender ideology!

It maybe that you dont need to read any books, as here you are already saying you know that younger people are being fed misinformation.

Not saying you shouldn't read any books of course.

Another area of interest / information would be to follow a number of campaign groups, because what they are showing, in real time, is how far the tentacles of trans ideology has undermined women's sex based rights. Its also useful as it keeps you up to date with developments, further encrouchments on women's lives.

So off the top my head (and there are others)
> Sex Matters
> Fair Play for Women
> For Women Scotland
> Keep Prisons Single Sex
> Let Women Speak
> many other that I am sure others can recommend

Should be able to find them by searching / googling, but will have more time later to add links if needed.

Also if you have free time, worth tuning into the live stream of Let Women Speak open mic meetings https://www.letwomenspeak.org/events

@IwantToRetire I really appreciate the campaign group information…am in Scotland but so remote-rural I often feel I can’t be much help which is foolish of me really.

Scotland you say! Did I mention the catalyst for book 1 was the GRR (Scotland) Bill and Sturgeon being an idiot! And raises money for For Women Scotland.

I'll shut up now!

IwantToRetire · 19/02/2024 20:58

AS far as I can see women in Scotland are leading the campaign of women fighting back!

Apart from For Women Scotland, there is Women Won't Wheesht, and events happening in Falkirk and another in Alloa in the next few weeks.

Hopefully some of those living in Scotland on FWR can give you more update to date info.

Boiledbeetle · 19/02/2024 21:20

The women of Scotland have definitely been the most pissed off and with the most reasons to be. The way self ID was brought in on the quiet via the prisons it's shocking. And even now they still won't back down fully

Jelliclecats · 19/02/2024 22:53

@Boiledbeetle I bought both books tonight.
Years ago I lived in Glasgow and was far more radical, was a member of the SSP and knew in person other women who wanted a different world, who were like me…somehow over the years I let myself become so jaded; almost invisible. Can’t let it continue.

Material Girls by Kathleen Stock.

SoupDragonsFriend · 20/02/2024 00:06

I've spent the last couple of months trying to get up to speed on all of this as well. I also highly recommend the Helen Joyce and Kathleen Stock books.

Time to Think: The Inside Story of the Collapse of the Tavistock's Gender Service for Children by Hannah Barnes was a useful in depth overview of the Tavistock's work and demise. The denser chapters were quite slow going but they are interspersed with accounts from service users which are interesting. The book also gives an idea of how Mermaids was entangled with the clinic's work.

There's so much on Youtube but I found The Lost Boys: Searching for Manhood and The Detransition Diaries: Saving Our Sisters documentaries - the stories of young men and women detransitioners - very moving.

Something else that was posted on this board fairly recently was a book being used with young children in schools called She's my Dad by Sarah Savage. It's about a 6 year old girl who has a father who has chosen to represent himself as female. The the stereotyping, the indoctrination and the potential confusion is very obvious. It's read by a trans person online here. There's a parallel book called He's my Mum which I haven't yet seen. There appears to be a growing number of books like this for younger children out there and it's very, very worrying.

This might seem an odd suggestion, but to really grasp what we are up against, in all its woke bingo word salad batshit mentalism then anything by Judith Butler should be required reading. Truly the L. Ron Hubbard of the gender Koolaid nutters.

It's not an odd suggestion and I love your description. I bought a couple of her books because I thought I might need to use her for a dissertation and then wished I hadn't. I couldn't make head nor tail of what she was on about. I then listened to an audio book which analysed Gender Trouble and was still none the wiser. I gave up and sold the books.

Not sure if this is exactly what the OP is looking for, but I’ve found some podcasts on this subject really worthwhile. I can recommend ‘Gender - A Wider Lens’, which is quite wide ranging but tends to focus on how gender affects children, teenagers and young people, and I’ve found some of Julian Vigo’s Savage Minds podcasts really interesting, although it depends on her guests, and her presenting style can take a bit of getting used to. ‘The Witch Trials of JK Rowling’ series was also well worth a listen.

Jelliclecats · 21/02/2024 02:01

Definitely a lot of information for me to get through, I’m glad I thought of posting here - thanks everyone.
