video showing we can tell who's a man and who's a woman

There's a video I've seen which has a dancing man and a dancing woman but they're in the dark with lights on. It's really easy to tell wich is which. I want to show this to someone but can't find it. Can anyone help and share a link?

I can't help but I want to see it when you find it!

Where did you last have it?

Is it in the airing cupboard?

literalviolence · 12/02/2024 22:51

It definitely exists. It was linked to on MN. Maybe they're walking not dancing but it's really good at showing that we really, really can tell whose male and female and clothing does not deceive.

Do you think men are less good at telling than women? I think they probably are.

Terfosaurus · 12/02/2024 22:54

Is it one of the "glowsticking" videos where they dance with glow sticks stuck to them?

literalviolence · 12/02/2024 22:55

Yes I think that might be right. do you have a link?

pickledandpuzzled · 12/02/2024 22:58

I would like to see that.

literalviolence · 12/02/2024 23:00

I know someone has posted it here before. A male and a female dancer I think.

Sorry no, there are probably thousands of those type of videos.

I did a Google search and it wasn't quite right. The video I'm thinking of was professional dancers. In leotards. Just dots on their joints. Still really clear who was female.

No dancing I'm afraid but there's a webcam at Santa's village. Loads of people there during a day, all wearing thick snow suits, hats, gloves, etc. Despite the normal lumps, bumps, hair, faces often being obscured it's not a problem distinguishing the sexes

I don’t imagine men get particularly confused as to who is an actual woman and who only thinks they are.

Karensalright · 12/02/2024 23:07

@Boiledbeetle you so make me laugh

dapsnotplimsolls · 12/02/2024 23:08

It was definitely posted on here in the last couple of days. Can't remember which thread though.

I think that children and women have an innate ability built up over evolution to identify a male person. This is because strange males would have been more of a danger to them than a strange woman. A woman being less likely to harm them and not going to rape them.

I think that male children tend to lose the ability as they mature into men so other men are less of a risk as they can fight them off.
I also think that males as they go through puberty become more aware of the secondary sexual features like breasts and miss the more subtle things like gait and stance. Hence why men think transwomen pass when women can identify them.

This is the one you want

it is based on lots of research and you can manipulate the figure to go from male to female

In research terms, these videos of people represented by white dots on the joints are called 'biological motion figures' or 'point light walkers' or just 'biological motion' so use that as a search term.

also data showing adults are very sensitive to the sex of the figure

I only posted in a light-hearted 'wotireckon' way, but yes, that's interesting and makes a lot of sense. Of course, most people can tell most of the time, but I'm sure males are a few points below. And I think that's right about noticing gait when older.

Dogfisher · 13/02/2024 10:11

That is brilliant!

That's cool!

Men walk far more with their arms - moving them forward from their shoulders in a kind of straight line. Women tend to walk less with the full arm, more the lower arm, keeping the top half of the arm closer to the body. There is more flexiblity and swing in the arms too.

I agree with all that.

I also wonder if there's a distinction between men who find what I think of as a "drag" look (super heavy makeup, surgery, heels etc) attractive and those who don't. My experience of men is that they have a strong opinion on this either way. Maybe the ones who kind of need all that extra stuff to be attracted to a woman would see that on a man and feel the attraction and not ponder the sex.

Rightsraptor · 13/02/2024 13:58

I'm sure I read a while back that the Karolinska Institute in Sweden did some research on this around the year 2000. It did indeed prove that women are quicker at spotting sex than men are. This is presumably for our safety.

What's the betting the Karolinska (or anybody else) wouldn't get ethics approval any more for such a study?
