That's two sensible PCCs at least. Let's hope more join in to reassert the use of reality based language.

Thames Valley Police "wrong" to accept suspect's self-description as female, says crime commissioner.

That was what I thought at the time

Correctly.

'Lisa Hauxwell, also known as Craig John Hauxwell'

From the Daily Record, in a story with dizzying shifts in descriptors and including the priceless sentence "On Monday, Hauxwell featured on a Wanted Faces appeal broadcast on Crimewatch as both a man and a woman in a bid to track her down".

The Telegraph used this man as an example of a female sex offender.

Edited

I reckon the Telegraph printed the piece (decision by the main / section editor?) and someone (photo editor?) decided that the bit about living as a woman or a man could cover some pictures injecting a little realism.

A response back already from the PCC's office.

My email:

Thank you for your recent comments regarding the alleged sex offender Osareen Omoruyi.
It is of great importance that the public are able to trust the police. Calling a man a woman is stating an untruth, and undermines confidence in the police. It will distort statistics and puts vulnerable groups at risk when crime is not accurately reported and recorded.
Can you reassure me that Thames Valley Police will agree that male suspects will be named as male going forward, so there is no further confusion?

Response (partial):

'The PCC has raised this matter with the Chief Constable, as part of his regular review of Policing performance. However, please note that operational policing decisions are the responsibility of the Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police, the PCC is not allowed by law to intervene directly.'

'Complaints about standards

You can complain about how a police force is run. For example, you can complain about policing standards or policing policy.'

Re message from the PCC

"However, please note that operational policing decisions are the responsibility of the Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police, the PCC is not allowed by law to intervene directly.'"

Which makes a person wonder about PCCs who are elected, presumably to represent the public, and paid considerable sums in salary and money to run their offices - what the hell are they for? What is the point of them?

I can see the value in having someone separate from the chain of command, outwith the force.

'The core functions of a PCC is to secure the maintenance of an efficient and effective police force within their area, and to hold the chief constable to account for the delivery of the police and crime plan.[7][8] Police and crime commissioners are charged with holding the police fund (from which all policing of the area is financed) and raising the local policing precept from council tax.[9] Police and crime commissioners are also responsible for the appointment, suspension and dismissal of the Chief Constable,[10] although the 2011 Policing Protocol Order states that the PCC "must not fetter the operational independence of the police force and the Chief Constable who leads it"'

Bit of a difficult position. Sort of powerful, but not allowed to exercise that power?

I spotted that story on the DM website too: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13072607/amp/Commissioner-wrong-calling-trans-sex-crime-suspect-woman.html

Good on the PCC! How could a “female” have committed the alleged crime (“sexual assault by penetration” as per the police press release)?!

If this madness continues, the crime stats will incorrectly suggest a surge in sexual assaults committed by “females”!

Crime tsar rebukes police for calling trans sex crime suspect a woman

Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Barber said Thames Valley Police was 'clearly wrong' when it relied on gender self-ID to call Osareen Omoruyi a woman in a press release.

"Good on the PCC! How could a “female” have committed the alleged crime (“sexual assault by penetration” as per the police press release)?!"

For the sake of accuracy, that is a crime an actual female could commit. It's intentional penetration of the vagina or anus of another person with a part of the offender’s body* or anything else, which is of a sexual nature and without that person' s consent.

*except the penis, when the offence is rape

Sorry if TMI

But in this case, the alleged offender is male.

Edit: punctuation

Surely PCCS (like 'czars') are a classic example of Government's Jim Hacker-ish habit of Being Seen To Do Something?

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 12/02/2024 15:33

For ages it was just woman that had been taken but sex was still male.

Now it is both woman and female.

Years ago I was prepared to use prfered pronouns and have male women. Now I can see it is all bollocks (pun intended) and words have meaning.

ArabellaScott · 12/02/2024 16:11

Yes, exactly. We thought pronouns were a politeness, and therefore inconsequential.

They are a very big part of the problem.

Something else that's occurred to me which has been mentioned before. As i understand it jailed sex offenders are put on a treatment pathway to hopefully reduce the risk of them reopening when they're released. I believe it's tailored differently for males and females. The last I heard transwomen were put on the female path, despite their offenses being very much of the male type.

This seems not just idiotic but dangerous. Letting down not only the public with whom the offender will be living but also the offender. As genuine female sex offenders are very rare it will also skew the data on the efficacy or otherwise of the treatment.

I could be misinformed or perhaps this was once the case but isn't anymore.

ArabellaScott · 14/02/2024 17:14

The PCC has been criticised for his stance.

'Mayor of Witney Owen Collins told the Oxford Mail: “The gender identity of the attacker in this horrific incident is not relevant.
“I’m disappointed that our PCC has chosen to make that the focus of the story.
“Witney is proud of its diverse community and to seek to cause division and inflame a culture war in this way does nothing to make people safer - if anything, quite the opposite.”'

But also supported:

'His comments have been backed by Liam Walker, a Conservative councillor on West Oxfordshire District Council.
“I think Matt is completely right to make it clear to the public who has been arrested," Mr Walker told the Oxford Mail
"When appealing for information over a serious crime, that is very unusual for this area, it’s crucial the police deal with facts and ensure the public have the right information in order to assist with the appeal.”'

What is important, Mayor Owen Collins, is the sex of the attacker, which the police falsified.

The gender identity of the attacker would have been less relevant if his sex had been correctly reported, Mayor Owen with absolutely no skin in the game Collins.

ArabellaScott · 14/02/2024 17:33

Yes. It is also possible the gender identity of the suspect might be relevant if it is part of a fetish or paraphilia.

True.

It's also disappointing he is showing concern about the perp but none for the victims, tbh.
