Coventry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre (Crasac) has funding from local council cut

In a statement, the council said the contract was awarded in 2019, based on the numbers of people accessing support at the time.
The authority said the key aim had been to reduce waiting times, but this has not happened and numbers had "risen sharply" despite the additional investment.

"As a result, the council has decided that, rather than renew a contract that is not addressing increasing waiting lists, we will work with various partners to provide a new, system-wide improved approach for this important population," it said.

"We will ensure services continue to be delivered, and are currently looking at alternative ways of doing this as a priority."

I dont know if there is a longer statement, but this is the most ilogical and unprofessional explanation for cutting funding.

I know nothing about this particular service, but unless there is evidence that the growing waiting list is because Crasac can be shown to be taken on fewer clients per support worker / councillor, then it isn't justified.

The increased waiting list could be because more women feel able to come forward and seek help.

And / or that there are more women who are survivors of sexual violence and rape.

Presumably the Council thinks some generic trauma support service that allocates users 5 minutes of support from random therapists is good enough for women.

Campaigners are planning a protest outside the city council offices on 20 February and the charity has urged people to sign its petition to secure sustainable funding for sexual violence support services in the city. (Coventry Council has an e-petition on its democracy section of its web site.)

when in the sector i used to work closely with this service. The issue is underfunding which has always been so for them, am fucking so upset about this.

This is horrible.

Thanks, OP.

Thanks for link. I never fully understand the petition rules - sigh!

I suspect that other services are also being defunded through some contrived evidence.

Women's services are vulnerable on all sides.

This is appalling. CRASAC is an excellent service, run by very experienced and committed people. Coventry Council are in a real mess, they've not submitted accounts for the last two years apparently and there also seems to be money unaccounted for from the City of Culture funds. So if course, it's vulnerable women and girls who are paying the price for their incompetence. Shame on them.

Given the crisis in local authorities nationwide I expect lots of similar services are at risk.

That said, there's also issues like we had in Scotland - Three good, established, vital services (Monklands WA and I forget the others) cut because they didn't offer 'gender inclusive' services, and the funding going to Sacro, which happened to have had Mridul Wadhwa's husband involved.

WtF????????????

Were no questions asked at the time?

Unbelievable - not.

Well, feminists made noise about it. But the Scottish government are dedicated to ignoring women/feminists as hard as they can.
