I heard there's over a hundred genders but surely a lot of them are going to be absolute mince like cat gender etc? Maybe I'm mince gender, who cares.

Gender is infinite and unique to each individual and changes as often as I cut my hair/change my trousers.

It's a useful term when we're talking about societal stereotypes and cultural assumptions etc.

It has no inherent correlation to reproductive biological sex.

She was asked on Twitter some years ago if she had been saying with that article that there were more than two sexes, and she basically said no, two sexes with possible variations in each one.

yeah seems like gender is something that, while it matters a lot to some people, is entirely optional and can be safely disregarded if you already have enough hobbies

They know better than highly intelligent scientists, evolutionists, biologists, and geneticists JUST how sex works.

And any of us who have actually grown and birthed human beings with our LIVED EXPERIENCE of how sex works.

Gender is effectively golf isn't it? (prove me wrong).

NoBinturongsHereMate · 02/02/2024 10:02

At least golf gets you out in the fresh air for a walk.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 02/02/2024 10:03

Yes, golf involves "touching grass".

MagpiePi · 02/02/2024 10:03

Golf is just a good walk spoiled

So she did.

The trouble is that many more people refer to the original article than the subsequent clarification.

Is that a variation of touching cloth?

ArabellaScott · 02/02/2024 10:05

Golf - a lot of fuss about wee balls and difficult holes and some bloody awful fashion choices.

Sounds about right.

Golfers can be very annoying when they wang on about their handicaps etc, but they aren't as irritating as many genderists.

Let's see... Holes, flags, questionable clothing choices... right so far, Bez.

ArabellaScott · 02/02/2024 10:11

Troubled greens
Endless pontification about swinging
Enormous efforts to control turf

Ending up in a bunker ...

The Fuhrer Bunker?

BezMills · 02/02/2024 10:40

Imagine being taught about the end of WW2 as a young Fifer. But Miss Armstrong, whit why was Hitler hiding in the kitchen cupboard? (bunker means kitchen counter top in Fife)

ArabellaScott · 02/02/2024 10:54

whit why - there's a phrase I've not heard in a while.

I think I've done it wrong. In "The boy in the train" I think it's 'whit wey' which means (in) what way or just why. We never said that, I just added a bit of flavour

lifeturnsonadime · 02/02/2024 11:10

That 'He's a man' you tube video is brilliant @RainWithSunnySpells

They've all got a fucking cheek when it comes down to it.

Beowulfa · 02/02/2024 11:12

Surely India just needs to flash India's "cervix" at Dawkins to prove him wrong?

ErrolTheDragon · 02/02/2024 12:40

They know better than highly intelligent scientists, evolutionists, biologists, and geneticists JUST how sex works. It's hilarious.

And also better than parents.... there's a good reason why MumsNet is particularly resistant to the counterfactual bollocks on sex.

I think some of the confusion in younger generations may be because in the last 50 or 60 years we have to a large extent decoupled the act of sex from its primary evolved reproductive purpose. And that's obviously great - the positives in terms of gay rights and women's liberation is enormous! But evidently it's left some people weirdly liable to missing the obvious.

Aye, it was 'fit why' when I was a kid and it just meant 'why'.
