Organisations which are difficult to work for if you’re GC

HagoftheNorth · 29/01/2024 14:52

People here have regularly listed organisations they choose not to buy from because of not wanting to support their stance on, eg, encouraging girls to have mastectomies. I was wondering if it would also be useful to name those organisations which make your working life difficult if you are GC.

Obviously, it’s sensible to (at least) name change before adding to the list!

Any nominees?

Civil service. Swallowed the gender woo woo hook line and sinker.

theilltemperedclavecinist · 29/01/2024 15:03

From indirect knowledge, so no need to nc, local government. Except the VAWG teams. I'm reliably informed that they are terribly transphobic, can't think why 🙄.

happydappy2 · 29/01/2024 15:08

Prison service, Magistrate Courts....as well as anywhere where safeguarding children should be top priority-here's looking at you Girl Guides. Academia, schools, the list is endless

HagoftheNorth · 29/01/2024 15:09

Well yes, I guess it’s common knowledge that the OU might not offer a particularly comfortable working day.

Clavecinist, except perhaps in Sussex, given poor Sarah found so little support as a service user, I’m guessing to VAWG team isn’t exactly GC!

The list is long, certainly, but I think it’s worth being more specific, eg I think Reading Uni offered Jo Phoenix a role? So not all academia

My Alma Mater the University of Sussex is obviously aggressively antiwomen's rights.

Survivors' Network is independent, but you are not wrong about Brighton councillors. I was referring to permanent staff, who tend to be Stonewalled to the eyeballs. But the VAWG staff that I have heard about (London) seem a little more unreconstructed.

I realise you really need specifics!

nothingcomestonothing · 29/01/2024 15:37

The NHS. Stonewalled to the hilt.

TownGown · 29/01/2024 15:46

Is this another way of saying "which organisations support trans people/rights"? If so the list would be very, very long.

I've seen similar compiled lists in the past and IMO it just looks ridiculous if the expectation is everyone on the list should be "boycotted".

Time might be better spent compiling a list of orgs which are known to have gender critical views?

nothingcomestonothing · 29/01/2024 15:53

No, it's not. HTH.

HagoftheNorth · 29/01/2024 17:20

The point is more that people considering taking a job in a particular organisation would be able to check before applying/accepting.

The problem with recording GC supportive organisations is that
a) an organisation doesn’t need to present as GC to not be demanding pronouns etc
b) an organisation might just not have any report at all, and it would be wrong to assume that means a GC employee would be uncomfortable

TownGown, there is no expectation for anyone to boycott anything, just some extra information about the sort of culture you might encounter if you work for, or with, particular organisations. Plus, frankly, it is perfectly possible to create a culture where both trans and GC people feel comfortable. After all, most of the things we do at work aren’t affected by sex or gender

Public and third sector organisations seem to be very captured compared to the private sector. That said banking, children's / YA publishing and tech seem to be worse than most when it comes to private sector capture.

WaterHound · 29/01/2024 17:50

Much of education seems to have been completely captured but thankfully I think that some people are starting to see the damage that is being caused to vulnerable young people. It is a tanker to turn though as there are a lot of very keen genderist teachers...

HagoftheNorth · 29/01/2024 17:53

It seems clear from posts on FWR that some schools are essentially fine, but others would be hideous places for GC teachers, or other staff to work. I think we need organisation names!

Arts Council

AnnaMagnani · 29/01/2024 18:25

Prison service I think it depends.

Sex offenders prison - views largely typical of this forum
Other prisons - v different trans population of people with very significant mental health problems. Staff generally feel sorry for them.

WhichWayPleaseImLost · 29/01/2024 18:38

The NHS is not a monolith. If you work in a small, less integrated bit of it, you may find like minds. Trying not to be too specific as you can tell, but I am out as GC (and not alone).

drhf · 29/01/2024 18:46

Some people seem to struggle with the idea that the law requires employers not to discriminate against staff whatever their views on the existence of gender identity.

“Making your working life difficult if you are GC” is unlawful. OP is asking for a list of employers which either don’t understand or don’t follow the law.

This list will presumably shorten as more discriminatory employers are taken to the cleaners.

AnnaMagnani · 29/01/2024 18:46

Agree re: NHS. In my last team I was out as GC and peaked the rest of the team.

In current team the leaders both have pronoun badges on their lanyards, no way am I bringing it up.

Slippersaurus · 29/01/2024 19:16

Yes the civil service but it’s supposed to be impartial so please don’t be put off joining by what is surely a blip, especially now we have SEEN.

Woman2023 · 29/01/2024 19:21

Don't forget that the Civil Service, NHS, schools, councils, banks etc are made up of normal people who know perfectly well that humans can't change sex. Don't give up on any of these organisations.

AnnaMagnani · 29/01/2024 19:22

In my last team, the only person who was in to pronouns was someone who was desperately desperately kind.

But even she knew people weren't actually changing sexes.

Chrysanthemum5 · 29/01/2024 19:24

Pretty much any university in the UK is hard to work in if you understand reality. The TRAs are bad but there are also endless opportunities for people to waste time in performative nonsense that helps no one.

PermanentTemporary · 29/01/2024 19:30

The NHS can be fine, depends entirely on the team. Tbh the trans employees at my Trust are probably about as GC as I am. I will admit I don't talk about it at work because I'm a good 20 years older than most of my colleagues and I just don't think any of them know as many trans people as I do, or have thought about anything beyond the odd training course. They certainly don't have teenage children.
