Transgenderism not a modish fad because: Jan Morris

Says the outgoing head of one of Edinburgh's private schools.

“I often use the experience of Jan Morris, whose testimony about trans status, having gone up Everest as a man, had children as a man, married and been in the army, all the time feeling like a woman, means [trans issues] cannot be dismissed as a modish oddity.
“Once you have accepted that, you accept that in the population there will be children experiencing that, we have to try and understand that, not to judge either way but make sure their experience in society and in school is as supportive and caring as it possibly can be.”

You'd think someone who runs (ran) a school that charges almost £16K/a is a bit more clued on.

Oh dear....

NecessaryScene · 27/01/2024 09:42

Men wanting to act like women certainly isn't a modish oddity - it's as old as time.

The modish oddity is the current response to that desire.

popebishop · 27/01/2024 09:45

I agree there have always been people that recognise the sex they are and wish to be the opposite sex.

What that has to do with people saying everyone has an inner gender identity that renders sex irrelevant for everyone, I'm not sure.

MrsJamin · 27/01/2024 09:49

Men being turned on by putting on women's clothes has happened forever, this isn't new, it's just accepted by society, bafflingly.

Time40 · 27/01/2024 09:49

Having recently read Jan Morris's autobiography, Conundrum, I am totally certain that Jan Morris was AGP, so I don't think Jan Morris is a good example for Mr Roffe to be citing.

Nailed in two sentences.

AnnaMagnani · 27/01/2024 09:59

Has he read anything written by Jan Morris's children all of which make it clear Jan was an AGP and arrogant shit?

Theinnocenteyeballsinthesky · 27/01/2024 09:59

lol I bet he thought he was being terribly clever too!

men getting off on presenting as women is definitely as old as time. The difference is no one was expected to behave as if they were actually women

Chrysanthemum5 · 27/01/2024 10:00

I just knew it would be him - he is very firmly in the TWAW camp and removed single sex toilets at the school. He's a menace

Hepwo · 27/01/2024 10:25

Lots of men seem quite besotted with Morris. See the interview with Micheal Palin for an illustration. Looks at him adoringly.

happydappy2 · 27/01/2024 10:48

It's quite terrifying that a Head Teacher would say this in a National Paper and think it's acceptable to conflate cross dressing males, with children who are anxious about their developing bodies. What has a cross dressing adult male who has Fathered children got in common with a pre pubescent child? Nothing. How can some people be so blind to what this ideology is doing.

Melroses · 27/01/2024 11:04

James/Jan Morris's writing was very persuasive.

Being good at writing doesn't make things true though.

RapidOnsetGenderCritic · 27/01/2024 11:16

having gone up Everest as a man

That tells me exactly how seriously to take Mr Roffe’s views. James Morris didn’t go up Everest. I think he reached Base Camp at about 18,000 feet, only 11,000 feet below the summit.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 27/01/2024 11:21

He's a worry isn't he? Very much "in plain sight".

TrishTrix · 27/01/2024 11:54

about to change schools.

if you live in Bristol and buy private education you might want to check it out.

Abeona · 27/01/2024 12:03

But Jan Morris was an abusive man who treated his wife and at least one of his children very poorly. His daughter talked about it in this Times article.

Morris had no respect for women. Just like all the other manly men in the military who ID as women because they have the three-letter acronym that cannot be named. I have friends in Wales whose extended family lived near to the house where Morris and his wife lived in later years and everyone in the area knew what he was like and how poorly he treated his wife and other women. It wasn't a family secret.

Jan Morris was a trans pioneer — and a cruel parent

The reporter and travel writer’s gender reassignment caused a sensation in the 1970s, but at home she refused to answer her children’s questions. The Jan they knew was neglectful, bullying and sexist, writes her daughter Suki Morys

'The Man Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain'... Noooo.... That Everest imagery of James/Jan Morris is almost just TOO ripe for comedic opportunity 😂 Ffs...🤦🏼‍♀️ 🙄😂 What, now you're saying he only reached base camp? 😂😂😂 Jeez 😂😂😂 The gift that keeps on giving 😂 ✌🏾❣️

duc748 · 27/01/2024 12:31

I've been to Everest Base Camp. it doesn't involve any 'mountain-climbing' as such. More like Snowdonia, except you have to be a bit careful about altitude sickness.

DiligentBanana · 27/01/2024 12:34

Even Jan Morris knew he was a man, because he still made his wife do all the traditional women's work at home! Or perhaps that's just another example of how a man makes a better woman than a woman.

He was associated with the 1953 Everest Expedition as a journalist, not a mountaineer. He wasn’t involved in any of the technical aspects of the expedition, and would not have been welcome on the icefall or at high altitude. He was a hanger on, there to write about the dramatic challenges of high altitude mountaineering and relay exciting stories to the public, and the big scoop was tying in the successful ascent with the Coronation.

FetchezLaVache · 27/01/2024 12:41

James Morris really isn't the gotcha the TRAs think he is.

DeanElderberry · 27/01/2024 13:24

Trans isn't a modish oddity, it's a manifestation of extreme misogyny. Of which J Morris was an exemplar.

Why do they keep making these straw men?

Wetandhorrible · 27/01/2024 13:28

"feeling like a woman": right, so not is,but feels like. Now,let's see him make a non circular argument, ideally nit based on stereotypes,on what the hell that means. And that's before we even get into why others physical safety should bend for your emotional perception. What an idiot.

I asked him a few years ago to explain 'feeling like a woman' without using clothing or gendered expectations such as make up
etc. he refused

TheDefiant · 27/01/2024 13:35

Couldn't read any further than him commenting that curriculum for excellence is a good thing.

It's known as curriculum for excrement by many, many teachers and parents in Scotland.

So if he can't get that right...he can't get anything right!
